In the 1980s and early 90s, Democrats were politically inept. They alienated the mainstream with far left views and support for radical activists over the previous 20 years. Three straight losses for president and five out of six between 1968 and 1988. They lost Congress in 1994 for the first time in 50 years. Worse yet, young people were abandoning them in droves. Teens and young adults in the 1980s were politically farther right than their parents or grandparents. The Democrat Party was pretty much a joke to the younger generation of the time. The culmination was the 49 state loss in 1984 after Mondale told the country he was going to raise their taxes.
Since then however, especially since the landslide 1996 Clinton re-election they have become a well oiled political machine (with plenty of free help from the media of course which doesn't hurt). They have made mince meat out of their opponents in the past 20 years.
Now, however, I wonder if they have finally gone too far left. Common sense would seem to say embracing radicals who gun down police, cause disruption in the streets, shut down freeways, and side with criminals is not a very smart political move. Along with the fact they don't seem to have limit as to how far left they will go on issue after issue.
Maybe that's where the silent majority is today, but somehow I doubt it. Time will tell if they have gone too far and are again alienating mainstream America like they did in the 60s to 80s.
