A Washington state woman has been sentenced to a year in prison for sabotaging railroad tracks near the US-Canada border in Washington state in an attempt to derail a train carrying crude oil.

Ellen Brennan Reiche, 27, of Bellingham was sentenced Dec. 17 in US District Court in Seattle to 12 months and one day in prison for committing an act of violence against a railroad carrier. Reiche is also required to complete 100 hours of community service while on federal supervision.

On Nov. 28, 2020, two women from Bellingham, Samantha Frances Brooks, 27, and Ellen Brennan Reiche, 23, were arrested and charged with terrorism after an attack on BNSF railroad by allegedly placing a "shunt" on the tracks which disrupts the low-level electrical current on the tracks and can disable the train’s safety features.

The town of Custer where the derailment occurred is located just north of Bellingham near the Washington state and Canadian border. According to the Justice Department, the device is comprised of magnets and wires that are stretched between the tracks.

Reiche, who identifies as "non-binary" and uses "they/them" pronouns, was the deputy field organizer for Washington State Democrats, according to their now-deleted LinkedIn profile.

Well, it's not like she put her feet up on Nancy Pelosi's desk or anything hideous like that. She just wanted to derail a train full of flammable liquid.

If she was wearing a Maga hat it would be ten to twenty.

What were the sentencing guidelines for the charge?

It can't be too strict, Custer is only 366 people and burning them all to death and destrying their homes can't possibly be seen as heinous as, say, getting betwixt the wind and Nancy Pelosi.

There was no "derailment" as the rightwing rag's article claims in the excerpt - "the town of Custer where the derailment occurred." Also, derailment isn't the typical result of a "shunt", according to reliable news sources. "Shunts" typically trigger safety sensors and result in trains being stopped until the problem can be resolved. There was apparently no intent to "derail" the train, but rather an intention to impede its progress to protest the building of a pipeline through indigenous land. A year in federal prison, three years of supervised release, and 100 hrs of community service seems about right.
