Wolves very much give a shit what prey animals want to eat- the fact that we ignored that almost killed yellowstone. Wolves stalk according to grazing habits. If wolves didn't care what sheep (or whatever) wanted to eat, they would starve, because of the specific way they hunt that moves with the herd. It's like a stalker that grabs you outside your favorite restaurant because they've been watching you and know you love Italian food, so they set up the absconding van outside the Italian place.

Sheep only need the wolves because of overpopulation. A sheep can survive longer without wolves than wolves without sheep (in this metaphor, and in real life). Predators depend on prey more immediately than prey depend on predators.

Because basic biology. That's just how the biosphere works.
