the recent aretha franklin performance film "amazing grace", which is the recording of her 1972 gospel album. i've watched it at least 10 times already, whenever i'm in a crappy mood she brings me right out of it.

I try to re-watch Ken Burns' "The Civil War" when it pops up on PBS from time to time. Not necessarily in order or all of it, but just the occasional episode. So powerful and well made. I have the whole series on DVD and get it out every few years.

p.s. the American Civil war, that is...

I don't watch much network TV. I also don't get into movies, unless it has some historical value or a documentary. I know, I'm dull in that respect. I am an avid watcher and member of PBS. However, I recently watched 'American Factory'. It was pretty decent. I have always heard of the Chinese work ethic and how much they sacrifice for a good job. This doc did a decent job of comparing the differences between the Chinese factory worker and the American factory worker. In some ways, it put a lazy lable on the American workforce.

Also, as a 23 year union member, it depicted some of the extreme measures a company will go to discourage and intimidate their employees to not unionize. I am in no way a giant fan of union shops. However, better pay and benefits, along with a harder stance on overall working conditions are the basics of any union. Say what you will about then, but that is the core basics of what they stand for.

Although this documentary was biased and leaning towards the American way of life and work, it did do a adequate job of showing this one Chinese company trying to survive and thrive in the American economy. Point being, an American manufacturing job will never be the same as it is in China. Plus, the Chinese showed ignorance and pre-determined bias about all Americans. We were discribed as lazy donkeys, If you rubbed our fur against the grain you will get kicked. I recommend this if you're into that sort of thing. Very informative. I give it three asses out of a possible five.

you should read 'the only plane in the sky-an oral history of 9/11' by garrett m. graff. it's fairly new.

it's stories from people who were directly involved, first responders, people who survived the buildings, family members. it's a really heavy meal but i couldn't put it down.

The Reelz channel has one of the best documentaries.

I watched one about Jonestown and it was far more in depth than the usual docs about the cult. It also goes back to Jim Jones' time in California. He was great with mind control and taking advantage of the good in people.

I believe it was called, "Jim Jones: Murder Made Me Famous".

Gimme Shelter
20 Feet From Stardom
The King of Kong
Standing in the Shadows of Motown
Batkid Begins
Exit Through The Gift Shop
Dadetown
(one of the best mockumentaries ever made, and nearly impossible to find).

Oh - and Amy. The scene where she lays down what will eventually become the recording take they used for "Back to Black" is especially haunting to watch.

not sure if it'll offer anything new as the latest documentaries are comprised of a whole lot of individual stuff, but i'll look out for it. thankyou

That one is good for the feels. Not a great doc but Galaxy Quest is so fucking good that almost anything about it will come out at least being watchable and making ya feel nice inside.

My own is The Civil War. Man, I can watch that shit all day every day. I don't even give 2 shits about the real Civil War and that long ass doc is just so damn good.
