HI, OK, I am pretty new to the story posting. I like to read the reader comments and enjoy writing.

My newest story however had a racist comment posted to it. I deleted it and of course it was posted by "Anon".

I just wanted to get it down and off my story as fast as possible but I realized afterwards that there might be a way for the mods to find that person and boot them had I not deleted it. I didn't find away to report a comment on my story and am not sure if I am missing something.

So my question is, has anyone had this happen to them? Is there a protocol for how a writer should handle this type of offensive comment?

There's not much chance that either mods (the story file has no mods) or the administrators will pursue anything like this. They are swamped just getting the stories posted. Just delete it when it happens and forget about it.

Unless the comment is spam, or breaks a Lit content rule ( underage, beastiality, etc. ) then the site considers it free speech, no matter how vile. Reporting it wouldn't have mattered.

The site does give you control over the comments, though. You can delete them at will, choose not to receive anonymous feedback ( forcing commenters to provide either an email address or a Lit username ), or not receive feedback at all.

It's a matter of choice. Some leave every comment up, because most of the time, it doesn't reflect on the story, but rather the asshole who made the comment. Such comments can actually be a draw for people to read your story.

Others choose to delete every negative comment. Some choose to delete only comments that are personal insults not related to the content of the story.

Just find your bar of what you're comfortable with and do that.

And don't fall for the increasingly frequent claims that you're violating the copyright of the commenter by deleting it. Some of these trolls come back later and make that claim after you delete their vile spew, and there's nothing even remotely true about it.
