I am torn on this issue. So far I have received a number of comment that can only be described as racist. To be fair some of my other readers have responded and told such people where to get off.

Like everyone else I have the power to delete the, usually anonymous, ramblings of these people but up to now i have adopted the same attitude as Dolly Parton.

("Dolly does it hurt you when people call you a dumb blonde"
Hell no cos I know I'm not dumb and I know I'm not Blonde")

However the question is, is it offensive to others to leave the comments of these Brave anonymous racist up where everyone can see them or should I delete them?

Leave it. If you are comfortable with what you wrote let it go. If anything a glut of comments like that may create interest in your story. Whenever people see controversy it makes them want to know what the buzz is about.

Same answer as every question about deleting comments:

If the comments are bothering you enough to ask here, there's a good chance that you should go ahead and put the hammer down on them.

Who are you going to piss off? The sheet-wearing bigots? Fuck 'em! :D There may be a few who come back and make a stink about deleting the comments, but you can just blast those too.

Contrary to trollish belief, they have zero, zip, zilch, nada right to say anything on your comment board. Just as Literotica reserves the right to not publish a story, or remove it at any time, you have the same rights where it comes to your public comment boards.

The only thing I personally delete are comments that attack other authors and advertising spam, but that's just my choice. Unless you're deleting piles of genuine, constructive criticism to leave only glowing comments, any troll commentary about you deleting comments just falls flat in the eyes of anyone except other trolls.

Negative feedback can sometimes generate new readership. I'll often read something that's been trolled because it's been trolled. It's all up to you.

Acquiring a permanent following of trolls, or even of only one troll, shows you've arrived as an author. If you find any of their rantings sufficiently offensive personally, by all means remove them.

For myself, I have acquired a permanent troll, who encourages others to engage in similar trolling (so far unsuccessfully). I take that as a merit badge.

DaYeKen, I told you I like your work, both privately and publicly.

And the opposite of love is not hate--the opposite of love is indifference.

I love this, BTW. I think you're right!

Now if I could just get up the nerve to stick something on Lit...

Thank you. Now do it; write your heart and guts out; pour the story out first, next sweat and agonize over it, and then stop thinking and post it.

I have to disagree with most

I have posted many, many times, I will leave negative feedback up until it becomes a personal attack. At that point, I delete. Why? Because these, "trolls" as they are called here, get off on people reading their posts. If these idiots don't see their comments, maybe it will discourage them.

here is an example

This is an example of what I am talking about.

"Bloody hell , a Paky Pom !!! This is the worst.
10/01/11 By: Anonymous
This feebleminded and immature travesty is typical inept example of foreign lack of education. Those people should write only for their own breed."

This does not hurt me since I am English as Oliver Cromwell. However, a person whose ethnic origin is pakistan would find the term Packi or as the writer says Paky, is considered grossly offensive.

So the question really is do we have a responsibility to remove such comments to save the offense of others.

No responsibility, no, but I'd remove it unless there were countering follow-up comments by others before I got around to doing it.

Why would you even WANT to keep racist comments? If it were me, I'd delete them right off the bat and report'em for being racist asshats (if they have an account).

No point in reporting them. Free speech goes to the outer limits here. You can "scream 'Fire!' in a crowded room" all you want, let alone fling racial slurs. The trampled bodies are expected to take care of themselves via the ignore feature :p

Go take a look at the General Board then come back and tell us if you think the site cares if there are racist remarks being flung around.

No. You can if you want but you certainly have no responsibility to do so. If it were me, I'd leave it up. Literotica is absolutely infested with trolls and racists. No amount of comment deleting will ever change that. The trolls are cowards 99% of the time or else they would comment with their Lit user account instead of choosing to be anonymous.

Cowardly douchebags are cowardly. Don't waste time stressing over them.

You know what really gets to me? I mean just to show you how cowardly they really are even a lit user handle is anonymous!

Unless your license says Spacefender or my birth certificate declares me as LOvecraft68 we are anonymous already.

There assholes have to have an even larger degree on anonymity than that.

Honestly my general opinion is that Any mouse's are mostly men who would be afraid of their wives finding out they have a membership to a sex site. Part of the reason they are so angry, they are whipped to begin with.

That's true. But I meant anonymous within the context of our Lit experience. As in, a troll not wanting his trolling to come back to his own stories. I assume that's real motivation for trolls to be anonymous. To avoid retaliation.

In some cases. My feeling is that most authors do not troll other authors. Now of course there are a couple of exceptions I can think of and the problem there is it is 2 people with alts numbering Legion.

Most trolls are just idiot readers and many don;t even read the stories they just find the category they hate and run up and down the new story lists. Almost all my one bombs come on day 1 then maybe a couple the second day and rarely after that.

Part of the reason the number of favorites is climbing at a steadily increasing rate is that authors ( especially in Loving Wives ) are eliminating the ability to make anonymous comments through the control panel.

More and more trolls are forced to get accounts in order to post their nasty commentary, and they're then taking advantage of the features available once they discover them. Non-trollish people are having the same experience, just for reasons that aren't nefarious.

Give people credit, they can see right through those comments. Leave them, don't delete any of them

Would I want my story to serve as a forum for someone else's racist rants? Absolutely not. I would delete them in a heartbeat.

Fascinating, really, how racial slurs are the new pornography. My late father-in-law (I mean father-in-law of first wife) foresaw this nearly fifty years ago. I thought his remark was incredibly perceptive, and time has borne this out--and how!

Speaking of which, SilkStockingsLover is working on a novel with similar issues. In copy editing it for SSL, I am struck yet again by how true it is that the shocking quality of racism gives a jolt to sex--like a shot of 151-proof rum in a can of Red Bull.

There is no end to human depravity--fortunately, or we'd have nothing to write about.

While some comments are racist for no reason I have noticed on this site. There are comments that seem to be retaliatory for touchy subjects like interracial domination and interracial cuckolding. While I have ready plenty of those kinds of stories here and other sites that paint one race as superior you do expect to get a backlash especially from Americans.

Being free sadly grants the idiots the power to tea bag and try to force everyone to think like them back in the 1950s. While I have made comments that are pretty harsh I try to avoid racism, but I probably have slipped a time or two.

I don't have any stories up as of yet, since I keep rewriting them completely because I am a perfectionist, I expect to have racist comments on one of the stories I am currently working on.

Delete

This site is supposed to be about escaping the world, which can be cruel at times. For me, to read something like that would be a turn off. I would say delete it.

Delete what comments you like in a totalitarian repression of free speech; you have the power. It's just not Lit's ethos.

You confuse racist with rude. Dolly pulled your argument in a way that you failed to grasp. 'Dumb' is not racist in any meaning of the the word and taking a pop at bottle-dyed blondes like me got royally screwed by Dolly.

I think you need to review your definition of 'racist'. I really don't see it on Lit

I agree with the majority here: if a comment's annoying you or upsetting you, delete it. It's your board, not theirs.

And as for racist comments - yes, go ahead and delete them. I would.

Like you, I used to agonize about the ethics of deleting comments. Not any more. I've only done it a few times - because, thankfully, it hasn't often been necessary - but I do it now whenever I want to.

Me personally? I will delete each and every racial comment... yes ppl hve the rgt to free speech justas I hve the rgt to press delete and not read it
