Right after the Second Great Depression of 2012, an unthinkable population explosion followed and additional issues (AIDS/HIV, etc.) compounded the U.N. to find desperate, sometimes unconstitutional and outright illegal answers to human rights abuses and overcrowding, unemployment, etc. This was dubbed by those in the know as, "Project Deep Water Black".
Men, Women and children were often abducted off the street in areas likely to be chalked up to prostitution/drug-fuelled turf wars in U.S. border towns, some war zones in Europe, et al. Some were arrested on legitimate charges and offered the chance for a clean slate and no further problems with family, the law or whomever they were in conflict with (if they signed away their rights to "drug companies" or others).
Some children were simply torn from unfit parents (the unfit parents told their baby was still-born,) and spirited to launch-sites where they were prepared for life in space in deep REM sleep. In the meantime, trained via hypnotic suggestion for their new expected professional roles in society once revived and deposited on their new homeworld.
N.A.S.A. & its global sister organizations designed a cryogenics-based generational vessel, a solar-sail vessel meant to hurl itself at near-light speeds to find designated "Earth-like" worlds most likely to support life on a colony. Equipped with resources intended to help them mine, fish or clone what they need to plant roots on their new homeworld & let nature takes its course from there.
Also equipped to report back with their own radars, telescopes and devices to propel satellites into orbit once they're reached their destination.
It's a solar-sail vessel with cryogenics-preserved "Mentors" that signed-on with the mission in full awareness of its' purpose and its' crew/cargo manifest. A collection of people from a cross-section of society from engineers, doctors, lawyers, soldiers, scientists, laborers, with a computer loaded down with poetry, music, formulas, and schematics.
The U.E.V. (United Earth Vessel) Icarus, the first of six ships. (Enterprise, Mandela, Crichton, Roddenberry and Clarke.) The five other massive sister-ships were also built at a secret shipyard on the far side of the moon, were deployed to the other possible future "Earth"'s. Unlikely to be heard from again.
Three months after Icarus and its' five sister ships were launched, Earth was destroyed by forces unknown as militant forces launched Nuclear Dirty Bombs and missile assaults on Canadian and American targets in unison, causing reciprocal global attacks. Some malfunctioning rockets veered off-course and hit neutral/innocent parties, causing their automated defenses to fire and wipe out what little was left.
