So, my grandfather died two weeks ago. It was not that much of a surprise - age 83, bone cancer. I was of course sad - but in the manly controlled way. Until we finally had to go through his belongings and I saw the little thing in his work room - shown on the picture.

A perfect dust catcher.
A nearly completely useless piece of metal.
A terribly crafted wannabe paper weight.

The only item that ever made me cry.

I had crafted it 15 years ago with my own hands out of two raw metal bars and if I remember right even with my own blood as I cut myself in the process (beware the rasp!). I gave it to him as a gift and I had totally forgotten about it. I took it as only part of my inheritance.

On a side note, a remarkable quote from the pastor:
"The worst sinners are, who believe they have a tomorrow. Treat death as your brother, as Brother Death, not as your enemy. You cannot defeat him. He will be there one day. He might not be welcome. But he is part of your life and nothing will change this. Living in peace with your brother is the only way to have peace in your life."

Am so sorry for your loss. But him keeping that, for all these years; just goes to prove how much he loved you.

And he always will, as long as you keep him in your heart.

Its hard, but i hope it gets a little less painful for you with time. :rose:

That's a great quote for the pastor. I usually get quite angry at what clergy say as such times but that quote is both beautiful and true to my way of thinking.

I think it's wonderful when you are treasured, as you surely were by your grandfather.

I'm sorry for you loss.

I hope you have loving and cherished memories of your grandfather to find peace and comfort in. My condolences on your recent loss.

I'm sorry to hear of your loss.

So often it is not the big things that remind us of the bond we have with those in our lives but the small, everyday, incidental. I lost my last grandfather over Christmas. Like you it was something that seemed odd to others but to me summed up who he was to me.

I like your handiwork Primalex. You're quite the artist.

My condolances on the loss of your grandfather.
