The premise is simple enough. China's heyday, reached in the early 21st Century, has abruptly ended with the humiliating defeat of her expansionist schemes at the hands of the quadruple bloc of Russia, Korea, Taiwan, and Japan in 2016. What started with her invasion of Taiwan ended with the secession of Tibet and Sinkiang, as well as inroads on Inner Mongolia by Outer Mongolia. Russia and her allies have also occupied Manchuria between them.

In the wake of this military fiasco, fingers have been pointed to blame for the embarrassing Treaty of Vladivostok. The Party leadership has cashiered the military brass, only to be cashiered itself soon afterward by a clique of civilian administrators from the provinces and the capital, joined by junior and mid-level PLA officers.

In the midst of this, Commander Lucian Harless, from the Office of Naval Intelligence, has been authorized to find out exactly the military capacity of this weakened China really is, as well as find out the threat represented by a resurgent Russia. America is once more worried about the balance of power. The USA doesn't need another Cold War, and he has to determine if it might be on the horizon again.

He is watching his hotel maid closely....very closely... she's pretty, but might she be an agent for the new Chinese government? Or the Taiwanese, for that matter?

Not to mention that lovely Beijing shopper who always seems to be in his vicinity? A coincidence? No, not according to common sense and his instincts. He would have to watch her even more than she did him, not a problem, given how appealing she was....but he would have to think with his brain, not his gonads. Never trust a possible spy, especially a female agent. He had learned that from the history of espionage that he had studied long ago. Though he wouldn't mind trying out some bondage with her...provided that she was the one bound. Same with the maid, come to think of it. He was a lifelong bachelor for a reason.....well, a number of good reasons.
