Not the American dream they talk about on TV,” Jones said. “There are two American dreams. One of them I call the ‘American fantasy.’ You know that one? Everyone is going to be rich. Everybody. And we're all going to be able to ride out to the great white suburbs, get a McMansion, get flat-screened TV to cover up the holes in our lives. That is the American fantasy, which is turning out to be the American nightmare. It is dying out on its own accord - it deserves no defense and it will get no defense. I am glad that is going away. That was not serving anybody.

I confess that I do not know what he's on about!

Some back story here?

All of us are waiting eagerly for you to come in and try and bring that death.

They keep forgetting the part about how the folks out in the burbs pay all the welfare and Medicaid and gubmint paychex. Its why made white men. To pay the effing bills.

In 2009, the last statistical update for the community I am moving to, median income was $72,665. The average house price $468K. It was 96.7% white. My wife will likely be the 10th Asian person living there with demographics like that.

The point? Fuck Off!

The dirty little secret about capitalism, is that you can't have rich people, without also having an underclass. The underclass is what makes the rich people rich. Without that in place, the rich wouldn't be able to make all their money. So obviously not everyone can become rich, in fact, the vast majority can't.

All he'd have to do is wait a few years, and you'll succumb on your own, scared gay grandpa.

My ex lived in suburbia and it was weird... Nobody knew their neighbors. My shitty apartment at the time, we had parties that stumbled over into other people's apartments. I fed their kids if I happened to be outside grilling and they were like, "Hey! Hotdogs!" Then I'd go visit him and it was all, "Close the windows, nobody can see you smoke weed!" and nobody talked to each other. They had "privacy fences" and it was just... sterile. I walk of shamed out of there so often people thought I lived there because he never talked to tell them I didn't.

I'm ok with the rich being disgustingly rich if it means I get to live American middle class vs. the rest of the planet sans what....maybe a hand full of other nations?

I mean even our poorest poor live WAY better than the vast majority of humans....it ain't that bad.

Yeah, I've heard that meme repeated a lot, and it's bullshit. The poor in this country are poor. I can personally take you to places that you would never want to live less than 2 miles from my house.

We live in little isolated bubbles to protect our ideologies.

I hate suburbs. All the houses look the exact same. All those fucking McMansions, mini-McMansions... What a horseload of cockshit!

My hometown looks more like the top pic. That's what he's trying to get through to you. There are places here in the US where people don't have clean drinking water. My family isn't "poor" and we can't drink what comes through our pipes- there are people in this town who don't have plumbing. The gap between the "rich" and "poor" is staggering. In the same town one family has no running water and the other has high speed internet.

Do you really think that the section 8 housing that you're linking too is the worst conditions that people in the US live in?

If so, you need to get out more.

I've personally seen people living in conditions similar to the first picture with my own eyes in this country... so you can pretend that it doesn't exist, but it does.

You're from Appalachia, right?

The Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, and reservations in general for that matter, are about as bad as it gets in America.

Really? Never seen anything in america that resembled the slums of a 3rd world hell hole occupying much more than a condemned lot in this country.

Oh I'm sure there are a few....folks living under bridges/condemned buildings and such. But I still say even they live better than the slums of Mumbai, Mexico, China, Russia and pretty much all of South America/Africa and the Middle east.

Hell the only poor people that live better than our poor people are from a hand full of nations in the EU that have a population the size of Arkansas.

I would say all things considered, and contrary to popular left thought, the USA could have/be doing a whole lot worse, and fucked the poor a whole lot harder.

I'm not a pure capitalist..I do think we should take care of our people. And yes our wealth is FREAKISHLY disproportionate thanks to killer gubbmint programs like the weekly terrorist scares from the right to fuel the MIC welfare to the wealthy GOP programs, and let's not forget Obamacare.

But I don't think trying to force economic equality for all through bullshit "gold star for EVERYONE!" legislation is any healthier than what we have now.

I've personally seen people living in conditions similar to the first picture with my own eyes in this country... so you can pretend that it doesn't exist, but it does.

Oh I have seen it...Paducah Kentucky....dirty shit stain Winnebago was the nicest crib on the lot. 15 fuckin' dogs under the silly thing..

But I still maintain US slums/shit holes are still nicer than 3rd world shit holes.

Also take into account scale....they have more people in cholera ridden slums than we have people.
