The Crest of Syraenel, the Light of Hope, Triton's Judgement--all these, among limitless others, common names for the Nautic Moon. A single sphere surrounded by a halo of revolving crescent beams that, since the beginning of all civilization, has been in existence. It illuminates the deepest reaches of the ocean floor, in spite of the fact that it is no larger than the average triton or mermaid. It has rested atop the highest spire of Syraenel's palace for centuries. There is no sea-being in existence who does not know of this relic--the symbol of Syraenel's undying power over the ocean deep, the covenant of peace and equilibrium of the waters...it is the gift of the Gods.
For years now, Aurora had dreamed of the day her eyes would be blessed with the sight of the Nautic Moon. To see not only its luminescence, as she always had in her distant village, but to see its true form from which such light emanated. She remembered tales her elders had told her--of its brilliance, of its majesty, of its power. And so the young sorceress, not too long ago, set off on her journey (or rather, her pilgrimage) to Syraenel.
"The waters off Syraenel are so cold..." she murmured, as she flipped her fins around slowly. "I don't know how much more I can take..."
Her doubt quickly faded as she saw Syraenel's gates in the distance. The warmth of the Nautic Moon increased with each step, and with each passing moment, the visions of the Holy Spire became more visible to her. Aurora quickened her pace, swimming almost frantically toward Syraenel. And as she finally reached her destination, she let out a sigh of relief, though she was not able to contain her joy.
She had finally made it. She was here, in Syraenel, the most glorious Kingdom the ocean had ever seen. And for the first time in her life, she was able to see the crescent beams encircling the Nautic Moon. Its power overwhelmed her. Its warmth comforted her. Its presence honored her.
However, her state of bliss was abruptly interrupted. A mysterious event ensued shortly after her arrival--for the first time in centuries, the Nautic Moon's divine light began to flicker. Aurora didn't know what to make of what she saw, and the Syraenians around her were just as disturbed. She cowered to the ground, her fins trembling.
"What...what just happened?" she asked.
But nobody replied. Syraenel was silent.
