Death + Government = Scandal

Giant balls of flames, thick gray smoke seen for miles, bodies smacking the ground, human flesh exploding on impact with the ground people jumping from 110 stories, because they were left no other choice in the final minuets of the World Trade Center collapse. This all could have been prevented if the FBI, CIA, and government officials did not allow first grade information to go by like yesterday’s news and lead to mass destruction. It is disturbing knowing that government officials did little to protect the citizens of the United States. September 11, 2001, was the worst terrorist attack on American soil ever. Many warning signs were brought to the attention of the government and other top official. These were let go and were never further investigated. This information sat and collected dust while government officials were not doing their job of protecting and to serving the people of the United States.

The U.S. government knew about the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks before hand because they were warned by other countries, warned about potential hijackers, and terrorist organizers, and did not stop them.

Leading up to September 11, 2001, the United States of America was warned by other countries of possible terrorist attacks. They were warned by Germany, Egypt, Russia, and Israel. These countries gave specific warning to the U.S. government, FBI, and CIA. “Russian intelligence notified the CIA during the summer of 2001 that 25 terrorist pilots had been specifically training for suicide missions. In an interview on September 15, 2001, with MSNBC, Russian president Vladimir Putin confirmed that he had ordered Russian intelligence in August to warn the U.S. government” (Martin 2). Also in August, Israeli intelligence service, Mossad, had sent a warning to the FBI and CIA that as many as 200 followers of Osama bin Laden were sneaking into the country to prepare “a major assault on the United States.” The advisory spoke of a “large-scale target” in which Americans would be “very vulnerable.” (Martin 2&3) The Los Angeles Times cited unnamed U.S. officials confirming this Mossad warning had been received. The government of Egypt sent an urgent warning to the U.S. as early as June 13, 2001. Also, June 13, 2001, was the first of many warnings sent to the United States government, FBI, and CIA. “The June 13 warning was sent because of a video made by Osama bin Laden. “Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak told the French newspaper Le Figaro that the warning was originally delivered just before the G-8 summit in Genoa. It was taken seriously enough that antiaircraft batteries were stationed around Christopher Columbus Airport in the Italian city. According to Mubarak, bin Laden ‘spoke of assassinating President Bush and other heads of state in Genoa. It was a question of an airplane stuffed with explosives’” (Sanger B1). Not only were there general warnings of the likelihood of suicide hijackings, but several of the hijackers, including the man alleged to be the prime organizer, Mohammed Atta, were under active surveillance by U.S. agents. It is too much to say that the terrorists were only able to accomplish their destructive mission because U.S. intelligence agencies ignored repeated warnings, refused to carry out defensive actions and manifested a seeming indifference to the prospect of a major terrorist attack on American soil. The U.S. government was being repeatedly alerted to the danger of devastating attacks using hijacked commercial aircraft, yet the FBI decided to conduct no serious investigation into a man, believed by French intelligence, to be linked to Osama bin Laden, who wanted to learn to steer a 747 jumbo jet, but not to take off or land. This was Zacarias Moussaui. Moussaoui was not even turned over to the FBI by the Immigration and Naturalization Service until after September 11.
The government was warned about the potential hijackers. Kahlil Almindhar and Nawaf Alhamzi were placed on the FBI “watch list” (Martin 8). The two were placed on the watch list because the CIA requested it. They were placed on the list after they were linked to a bin Laden operation in Malaysia (Martin 8). How is, it possible for two men being sought by the FBI and CIA, with alleged ties to the man U.S. government has named the most dangerous terrorist in the world, to purchase expensive one-way first class tickets and then board and hijack a 747 jumbo jet on September 11? U.S. officials first said they had only known of two terrorist suspects before September 11 (Martin 8). That information turned out to be false. Several of the other hijackers believed to have been accomplices had been brought to attention of U.S. intelligence agencies before the destruction on September 11. “Five of the alleged hijackers of the planes that were used in the terror attacks received training at secure U.S. military installation in the 1990’s” (Barry, Skipp, Wehrfritz 30). “Three had listed addresses at the Navel Air Station in Pensacola, Florida, when they applied for driver’s licenses or car registration. Another trained at the Air War College in Alabama, while the fifth took language instruction at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas” (Barry, Skipp, Wehrfritz 30).

The government knew about the ringleaders Mohammed Atta and Zacarias Moussaui. These two were brought to U.S. authority’s attention on several occasions. First Zacarias Moussaui was brought to U.S. officials’ attention on August 16. “Moussaui was arrested on August 16 when officials of a flight training school, the Pan Am International flight Academy in Eagan, Minneapolis, tipped off the FBI that he was seeking training on a Boeing 747 jumbo jet” (Martin 22). He aroused suspicion with his attitude. He was also very belligerent. What was also alarming was he paid his flight school training fee of $6,300 in cash (Martin 22). They became very concerned when he insisted on learning how to fly a jumbo jet even though they told him and officials he lacked the skills to fly even small planes. Moussaoui also insisted he didn’t need to learn how to take off or land just to fly it. Even with all this he was released by the FBI. The other ringleader of the hijackers is Mohammed Atta. “Atta was reportedly an object of attention for the Egyptian, German, and American police and yet traveled without hindrance between Europe and America throughout 2000 and 2001” (Martin 9). Atta also came to the attention of authorities on several occasions in 2001. In January he was allowed to reenter the United States after a trip to Germany, despite the fact that he was in violation of his visa status (Martin 9). “He had landed on January 10 on a flight from Madrid on a tourist visa, although he told immigration inspectors that he was taking flying lessons in the U.S. for which an M-1 student visa is required” (Martin 9). Atta was under heavy surveillance but he was reportedly observed buying large quantities of chemicals in Frankfort, apparently for production of explosives and biological warfare. Atta received many wire transfers of $100,000 from an account in Pakistan allegedly controlled by a representative of Osama bin Laden (Martin 10). Also, this “repeatedly showed U.S. officials proof that bin Laden inspired the September 11 attacks, but they have not explained how such a large sum of money could be transmitted with impurity to someone under FBI surveillance” (Martin 10). How could all these things just slip by the FBI and other U.S. officials?

The officials of the United States let very important warning signs go without a great look into them. This may lead to more attacks, or even greater destruction. Possibly if information is passed on to the people of the United States, it might be harder for terrorist to carry out their attacks. As a result of September 11, many signs were given. President Bush announced that warning was given to him a month before September 11 (Benac A1). Also, FBI and CIA officials released information that they to were informed. How can things like this just go by?

The United Sates government knew of the attacks before September, they were warned by other countries, flight schools reported to intelligence had information about potential hijackers, and terrorist organizers, and yet all this flew by the U.S. officials. How could Mohammed Atta receive wire transfers of large sums of money from a man linked to Osama bin Laden and his bank account? Also Atta was seen buying large quantities of chemicals. Was he all of a sudden a physics major carrying out lab experiments? Highly unlikely that he was. The government needs to make the right and much needed confession to the people of the United Sates, and that confession is living up to their guilt of knowing about terrorist attacks in advance.

Evidence clearly shows that there were ways to try and prevent the attacks, reduce the amount of destruction, or even stop it all together. How could all this go by with not even a question raised by the government?
