I think sometimes it's a 'horses for courses' situation here. There's some Litsters who I think are absolute twats but they've formed (hopefully genuine) friendships with others, and some who I think are wonderful but I know others find them dodgy (not looking at anyone in particular *coughs* *mumbles*).

Maybe they're not red flags. Maybe it's just a parade.

I don't disagree with anything you say. BUT (what, a disagreement? ) in my personal experience, it's not the people who are dicks on the threads that bring the real hurt. It's the ones who act like they're the good ones in public then behave poorly and disrespect in private (and by this, I mean lies and gaslighting - misunderstandings and personality clashes are inevitable at some point).

Checking posting history doesn't always help protect from that. Though, I do strongly believe that those who regularly use misogyny, racism, sexism and other shitty beliefs under the guise of "this is just a joke" should be given a wide berth.

Some people are good at hiding their red flags and it's up to us to use our instincts instead. If the vibe isn't right, back away... but even this is easier said than done. Maybe it's just me, but I have fallen into the "he didn't mean it like that" trap one too many times because I didn't see any other red flags. So nowadays I'm a huge advocate of getting out as soon as you feel it sitting wrong in your gut. No evidence needed to validate your reason to walk away.

And so endeth my opinion that no-one asked for. *curtsies*
