Well, as it turns out my system is now fine. I was finally able to get back online today, and yes, it is stable. But here's the real coup de gras...the cable guy came today, tested the lines in the house. They were fine. Then he went outside and tested the downstream lines. They were out. When he called it in and asked why they had been disabled, he was told "Well, we didn't know why they were there and thought they weren't being used."
There are 2 major problems with this:
1) They should have checked the service records at my addresss and seen there was a cable modem installed. They should have done this before they did anything.
2) When I called reporting trouble, they should have seen this change had been made, thus telling the tech exactly what to fix.
All I can say is *sheesh*.
