Hello all,
I'm after some help with re-attaching all the wires at the back of my pc hard drive. I had to take it to be repaired and now have plugged all the cables back in except - the headset for my webcam. (I can't find the instruction book) Does anyone know a website that will de-code the symbols on the sockets - like the tiny picture of the mouse, keyboard etc. There are some that are not so obvious. I've tried a google search but the only results I get are for emoticons and linguistic accent shortcuts.
thanks

If you have a digital camera try taking a picture of it and uploading it. Then I'd be able to tell you exactly what the ones on your PC mean.

If not, I recommend looking at the manufacturers website. If you are trying to plug into the sound card, then go to the sound care manufacturers website, or if you're trying to plug into the motherboard then look on their website, etc. They should have that information, but I wouldn't guarantee it.

You'll either be plugging into the motherboard if you're using on-board sound support, or you'll have a sound card. The holes that the wires plug into may also be color coded, in which case pink is usually for the microphone and green is usually speakers (headphones in this case). Also the plugs on your headset may have some symbols on them you may be able to match up with the ones on the PC.

That's picture of a laptop's audio/sound card connections, but the headset symbol is the one you're looking for. -- it might have a "speaker" symbol instead, or there might be "line out" connection with no headset or speaker connections.

Each brand of sound card is slightly different, so a picture or yours, or the brand and model number of the sound card would help a bunch.

It's just a new soundcard. Brand is PCI 3D Sound. I couldn't get a decent photo of the plug jacks. Maybe there's something wrong with the soundcard or the installation? No information on the pack so I think the best option might be to call the retailer. Thanks for trying to help.

Thank you everyone for your input. But I'll be taking the pc back to the shop. I originally took it there to get the fan fixed (making very strange noises). I got a new soundcard since I had unhooked everything anyway. So he can sort out the fan (noises again) AND check out the soundcard. And this time I'll make sure I write down exactly where everything goes!

sounds liek you just don't have drivers installed for the soundcard. you might get some basic windows sounds, but mic inputs and stuff would be gimp'd til you get legit drivers

Weird Harold - Just to tell you, those holes aren't 1/8 inch, they're 3.5 mm, iee. ~0.138 inch.

They are usually called "micro stereo", since they're smaller than the 6.25 mm (~0.246 inch) contacts you can find on older stereo equipment.

That might be the actual measurement, but Americans don't see or think in metric units. :p
