Major Johann Schmidt

1942
Rhenen, Netherlands
Wehrmacht base near Pantherstellung

When I was stationed at the Panther base, I knew that it was a way to hide me away and prevent me from climbing higher in the ranks. Of course, these suspicions were never voiced, I knew better than that. It was not a bad station, new recruits were taken in, trained, and sent off to serve the Fatherland, we kept the Pantherstellung in our sector in repair and ready for defense, overall, I was kept busy.

The only thing I really hated, was the fact that I had to answer to Obersturmbannfuhrer Eric Klindt. Eric was a weasel face man, his nasal voice irritated me to no end and he liked to rub it under my nose that he was my superior officer due to his membership of the Party. In my eyes, he was not a true soldier, he did not even know the basic parade ground drills and he refused to learn. What he did do, was to stay distant and aloof, keeping his secrets locked away inside the underground bunker built shortly after the invasion of the Netherlands. As usual, when the SS keeps a secret, rumors started and some of the rumors were totally outrageous, but the strange lights and sometimes smells escaping from the bunker's air outlets, only served to start even more rumors.

I was busy with my morning correspondence when a brisk knock came from my door, I looked up, disturbed at the interruption, "Enter."

The Corporal at guard duty opened the door and stood in the door and delivered a crisp Nazi salute, I gave him a half-hearted return salute, "Yes Corporal?"

He cleared his throat, "Sir, you have a . . . guest."

I frowned and stood up, I did not expect any visitors, "Who is it?"

The corporal blanched slightly, "A guest sent from Obersturmbannfuhrer Klindt, sir."

I raised an eyebrow, now fully irritated, "Well corporal, show him in."

He cleared his throat again, "The guest is a . . . female, sir."

Understanding came from that revelation, she would be one of the young women that the SS or Gestapo would "recruit" for their officers, I sighed and nodded, motioning that the Corporal should continue. I sat down again and carried on with my work.

Marije “Mandy” van Dee

Mandy Dee was being led to another “client”. It had seemed fun when she first started. But that was before the abuse and really sick things she had been asked to do or observe. She thought back to how it all started.

“Wanna make some big money” Her good friend Kaatje asked. Mandy looked up from her history book. Kaatje stood next to her desk wearing a cheeky grin that meant she was planning something fabulous or something twisted. Or both.

“You planning to break into one of the bombed banks downtown or something?” Mandy asked

“Nope, this is a sure thing” Kaatje twirled a strand of long brown hair around her finger. “The Germans are looking for two girls. You can be the second.”

Mandy looked out her dorm window where she could see the tulip fields and windmills. It radiated beauty, innocents, and purity. Everything Kaatje was mocking.

“What makes you think I’m that kind of girl?” Mandy asked

“Come on” Kaatje laughed “I know what you did last weekend”

Mandy nodded “But that was with my fiancé”

“It is still a sin. You are not married. But you liked it… you told me you did. You love cock. And this will pay well. 200 marks plus tips!” Kaatje explained excitedly

Mandy did the math in her head… how long it would take her working part-time at the bakery to earn 200 marks. It was almost 10 months! No, she would not do it, it was giving aid to the enemy!

“You know the Dutch resistant is still fighting.” Mandy countered.

“We lost in 3 days. The German’s won. Their soldiers are just like ours. They are people too. Adapt… and make money.” Kaatje reasoned.

Mandy thought about the money and how she could skip the hot ovens, greasy pans, cake tins, and cranky customers. She thought about how fun sex was… and how wonderful cocks were. She thought about making money in the middle of a war would keep her and her finance safe.

“Ok, but NOT a word to Jan” Mandy said to Kaatje.

“WHOO HOO” Kaatje said and did a little dance of joy. Mandy looked down to the gold ring on her finger with the small diamond in it that Jan gave her. Suddenly it felt tight… and uncomfortable. She took it off.

That was how it had started. The first date was good and fun. A threesome with Kaatje. But soon it turned ugly… and what would the next client be like, Mandy had no idea.

Corporal brought her to a good looking officer doing some paperwork.

"Major Schmidt, I'm glad to meet you. Mandy van Dee" I introduced myself.

I wasn't sure what to expect, I had only heard about the local girls and what some of them were forced to endure and I was quite sure that I have not been told the worst of it. That was why I was slightly taken aback when I looked up from my report to see the woman standing in front of my desk. With her slim figure, blonde hair, and blue eyes, she was stunning even in the demure clothing she wore.

"Danke Korporal, sie sind entlassen."

The Corporal gave me the Nazi salute and I waved him out, he retreated and closed the door behind him. I turned my attention to the woman and stood up from my seat, I moved around the desk to her, leaning in closer to look at her. I could see faint marks on her face and neck and shook my head, "Diese Schwachkopfe."

Even with light signs of her mistreatment showing, she was still a beautiful woman, and I could feel aroused by her, even without her having made any mention or move as to why she was there. I knew of course, but that did not make me a base animal, I finally responded to her introduction.

"Good morning Mandy, I am Major Johann Schmidt, I am glad to meet you as well. My apologies for the close scrutiny, it is not every day that a woman of your beauty is brought into my office."

I moved the chair in front of my desk and motioned for her to have a seat, before moving around the desk to take my seat, "How can I be of assistance to you today?"

Mandy

It was important to look the part. Mandy was dressed in the current fashion coming out of Berlin, this included a hat, small white scarf, blouse and tight skirt. Her heels were high and elegant. She looked at the top of the current fashion.

Next, she walked into the Major’s office like she owned the place. Looking confident made her feel confident. Although inside, Mandy was nervous and worried about this new client. Hopefully, he was not like the last few.

Mandy took the seat offered to her. She had been told that most men did not just want sex. They wanted to feel like they were on a real date. The best date ever! The men were far from home and wanted company. It was her job to provide them companionship. This included pleasant conversation, laughter, and compliments.

“Well, Major, I'm here to check on morale. In particular yours." Mandy said with a little bit of naughty lust in it.

"How are you liking your tour of duty here so far?” Mandy asked. Then she realized there were not drinking anything yet. “As you answer that question, I can pour us some drinks. Where do you hide your refreshments?” She asked.

Johan

I must admit that this woman was quite spectacular, she sat with a special tilt to her shoulders and he could tell that she knew how attractive she was. Her eyes were also clear and sharp, not missing much and even though he knew she could not be a spy, it was not every day a civilian came into his office.

"I am not a huge fan of my current assignment Ms. van Dee, but then again, who will be? A soldier wants to fight on the front, not train in the backdrop of a fortification."

I leaned back into my chair and motioned towards the covered tank standing in a corner, "I can offer you water or order us coffee. I like to keep a clear head, there is nothing worse than being muddled when you have young soldiers around you."

And Klindt stalking around. That SS bastard would love to report me.

I, of course, kept that thought to myself, I did not know this woman and even if she was only there to provide sexual relief, she could also be in Klindt's employ, and that SS bastard is hiding away too much to be trusted.

"From your accent, you are from these parts, but you are not from Rhenen, there is a slight difference in your pronunciation."

No alcohol! That made her job even harder. She remained seated, water and coffee did not sound good at all.

“Major… is it ok if I call you Johan?” Mandy asked. Johan gave her a nod, meaning it was ok.

“Johan, you have excellent insight. I grew up near Delft. I was attending the university when the war started. Unfortunately, in the current environment I have just been focusing on improving morale. No more studying for me!” Mandy explained with some excitement.

“I see, and how do you like your morale job?” Johan asked.

Mandy laughed “I will answer your question, but then you must tell me about yourself. Tell me about your background. Where you grew up, have you been involved in any battles? Ok” Mandy asked. Johan gave her another affirming nod.

“Well, first off, I think Germany got screw over after the great war, or world war 1. France trying to force your country into only an agricultural economy was stupid and disrespectful. The seeds of this war were planted by those French idiots! Now, I must say, I’m not a big fan of your current leader. I have never liked mustaches.” Mandy said with a smile.

“Now about my job. War is hard. Both on the soldiers and the people. I see nothing wrong with reducing loneliness during this war. My chances in town for companionship are not good. Most of the men of my age are either dead, captured, or supporting the war effort for Germany. As you can tell, I like worldly and intelligent men, like yourself. I love a great conversation with a handsome man. It turns me on.

This job opened up and pays well. I have always been very liberal about my thinking when it comes to intimacy. So I like it.” Mandy explained “Now it is your turn” She reminded him.

Johan

I listened to her as she spoke, she had a very sexy voice, without trying to sound sexy, there was just no way to pronounce words and sentences like that if you were not using your natural voice. She did try earlier to add a bit of sex appeal to her voice and I am sure that any man would have fallen head over heels for her right then. But I knew better, I knew why she was there and even though she had said that she enjoyed what she was doing, I was quite sure, that was not the case.

"I grew up in Essen and joined the army as soon as I finished school, I come out of a military family, so it was almost expected of me, being the eldest son. When the first offensives started, I was an Oberleutnant and took part in the invasion of Netherland and Belgium as our forces flanked the Maginot line into France. It was my promotion from Hauptmann to Major which sent me here, the war office stating that they needed my expertise in training new soldiers and keeping this camp under control."

I shrugged, "That is why I am here and why I am not in the front, but then again, I must sound like a crazy man for wanting to be in the fighting when I can be here in a relatively safe environment."

I leaned a bit closer to her, "I think that without the Treaty of Versailles, which crippled the German people, Hitler would not have gotten enough traction to come into power. He is a great statesman with a magnetic personality, but you need something to bring the people together and make them rise up. But this entire war has turned into a political game, if you are not part of the Party, you are almost sub-human. The SS and Gestapo move around and act with impunity as they know that they will not be prosecuted for their actions."

I shook my head and leaned back in my seat, "And you can tell me the truth Ms. van Dee, you do not have to fear reprisal from me."

Mandy

Mandy was a little shocked by Johan’s comments. It was weird for a German Officer to speak so freely.

“That is nice to hear. Oh, and please call me, Mandy,” she told him. “I can assure you as well, what we discuss or do is private. I get paid well for that very reason.”

Mandy looked at Johan wondering what to say next. What did the man like to talk about or discuss? He seemed to have strong opinions on the SS and Gestapo. He also seemed brave and wanted to go where the action was. He seemed like a good man.

“It is terrible when good people, like us, are placed into a situation where we might compromise ourselves. Kind of makes you wonder about the whole idea of right and wrong. So much is dependent on the situation and a person’s viewpoint.” Mandy stated. She took a deep breath and exhaled. She released the stress she felt about this new client. He seemed normal.

“Well, most of what I told you before was truthful. I did not discuss the more difficult events. I think it is best I skip them. I will say, I do like sex, but on my own terms. When I like my client, this job is fun. When I don’t, it is hard.” She explained

“I sure wish you had something more powerful to drink than coffee!” Mandy joked. “Since I have no fear of reprisal from you… I can offer you one of these?” She asked as she pulled a pack of American cigarettes from her pocket. “American, they are the best” She pointed out.

Johan

"You have an interesting outlook if you see me as a good person since I am part of the forces occupying your homeland." I gave her a slight smile, "But you are right, how do we justify what we do if we want to look at what is wrong and what is right. I have no option, do what I am told or get shot. You are forced to endure certain things to survive, so where do we draw the line?"

"Well then, seems like you have good connections if you have an American brand cigarette", I shook my head, declining the offer, "Thank you, but I don't smoke. Haven't smoked for a while."

I pulled open one of my drawers and produced a packet of Reemtsma cigarettes, still sealed, and placed it on the desk near her, "You can have those, my treat."

From the drawer I drew a lighter and reached over, flicking it to life for her to light her cigarette, before placing it back in the drawer. I got to my feet and walked to the door, opening it and startling the Corporal who was busy surveying the hallway, "Corporal, bringen sie mir Whisky mit einem glas."

The Corporal blinked his eyes, clicked his heels together, and moved away, I closed the door and took my seat at the desk. "Nothing against you having something stronger than coffee."

Mandy

“Thank You” Mandy said as her picked up the pack of cigarette. “I’ve had the American ones from before the war.” She explained as she took a puff. “They are good” she told Johan.

“I like to think of the Germans as visitors not occupiers. The Netherlands is a small country and we can’t hope to win a war against any of our stronger neighbors. However, once the visitors eat some of our cheese, good dutch chocolate, and sample some of our lovely women, they will grow tried of the flat land and spinning windmills. They go home and only come back to visit on a holiday” Mandy explained as she took another puff on her cigarette.

“Unless you eat some of our herring! Once you have tasted that… we are in big trouble. So that is why we do not give you any of our herring.” Mandy joked

Johan

I laughed at her remark about the herring, the more time I spent with her, the more I started to like her. Of course, having the looks that she had also may have helped, but she was funny and engaging.

"You know Mandy if all the Dutch women are like you, I most likely will not grow tired of your country at all."

There were shots fired from outside, but since training was done every day, I did not bother with it much. But when the shots started to grow closer, my attention drew away from Mandy and towards the windows.

"What are they doing?"

As I rose from my seat, the door burst open and one of the SS troops burst in, there was blood on his uniform and his eyes were wild, "Die waffen sind entkommen, wir sind verloren!"

I was about to reprimand him when a figure in prisoner's garb lurched into view and jumped on him, driving him to the ground and started to attack him.

No, not attack, the man was trying to eat the squirming, screaming soldier, or that was what it looked like. The soldier gurgled as the prisoner ripped his throat open and then turned his attention on the two of us. A strange moan issued from him and since Mandy was the nearest, he turned his attention on her and struggled back to his feet.

"Was machst du?"

The man ignored me and shambled towards her

"Halt!"

Still, he ignored me, even when I used my parade ground voice, which wasn't only loud but commandeering. Of course, Mandy didn't stay in her seat like a statue, but the man was totally focused on her.

"Stoppen sie sofort!"

Still, nothing. He was stumbling closer to her, so I did the only thing I could. I drew my sidearm from the holster on my side and fired. The man took the slug to the head and sank into a lifeless bundle on the ground.

"What on earth?"

Outside it sounded like we were under attack, but the shouts and orders that came in from the door and through the windows did not make sense. I looked at Mandy, "Are you OK?"

Mandy

Everything happened so fast, Mandy thought it was a bad dream. But this was no dream! The prisoner jumped on the soldier and tried to eat him! There was blood everywhere as the soldier's neck was torn open. Johan was ordering the man to stop, but it did not. Then the prisoner turned his cloudy haze eyes towards Mandy.

That was when she noticed, the prisoner did not look healthy. He had a bluish skin tone, pale lips, and prominent black veins on his face and neck. Mandy backed away as the prisoner got up stiffly and moved towards her. As he reached out for her, his head exploded in blood. Chunks of flesh, brain matter and blood covered Mandy's expensive outfit.

Mandy just stood there. She was in shock. At some point she finally heard Johan question

“Are you ok?”

“I think so…” Mandy replied, but she was not back in reality yet. Then she heard more yelling and glanced out the window. There were more prisoners running around out there. That sight brought her back. They were in real danger.

"What the hell is going on?" Mandy asked Johan

Johan

She was in shock and to a degree and to be honest, so was I. Not about the sudden violence and death, but why would things go from quiet to absolute insanity?

"That soldier said that the weapon is loose, there should not be any prisoners on the base and if there were, they would be soldiers from the detention barracks. These are not . . ."

I broke off as movement caught my eye, I turned to look and the soldier, who lay on the ground, started to move. With the amount of blood and the fact that I had seen his throat torn out, there could be no life. But the head turned to look at us and it was the face of a dead man, streaked with blood and the eyes were dead or appeared to be.

"This is insane."

The soldier managed to get his hands under him and staggered to his feet before coming right at us, this time I didn't even waste my breath, I lifted the pistol and fired. The round struck him in the head, and he went down. I could see more of the prisoners and now soldiers outside, the report of the pistol shot had attracted their attention.

"We need to get out of here. I don't know what on earth is going on, but there's too many of them, whatever they are."

Mandy

“Ich spreche Deutsch” Mandy said to Johan in fluent German. Like many Dutch, Mandy could speak, Dutch, English, French and German. She hid her knowledge most of the time. It was useful to ease drop on people, who spoke their own language, not realizing she could understand them.

But in this situation, she did not need Johan repeating everything to her. She leaned over and grabbed the dead soldier’s gun.

“I’m not exactly sure how to use it, but you might need an extra” Mandy said offering the gun to Johan. She also grabbed the soldier’s shovel handle. It was not the best weapon, but at least it was something.

“Where to” She asked.

Johan

He holstered the pistol and took the weapon Mandy handed him, it was a Walther P38 with two rounds left in the magazine. I looked at Mandy and thought about it for a moment, then I moved to the door, pushed it close, and locked it, I glanced at the windows and it looked like the most commotion was from the SS bunker's side, which was between us and the Pantherline, which meant the only real way to move, was towards Rhenen.

I moved towards the window and looked around, before climbing out, motioning for her to follow, I helped her through the window and stuck the second pistol into my belt. Around us, soldiers were firing at the mix of soldiers and prisoners, but they were overrun, the recruits were already fleeing and as I looked towards the bunker, I could see soldiers, prisoners, and scientists lurching out of the doors and heading for anything that moved or shot at them.

I already knew that things were past the point of trying to set up a workable defense, an explosion from the munitions dump told me that any action to fall back and set up a defendable position with the heavy weaponry housed inside the bunker was gone as well. That left a few machine guns and the training mortars, for now, the situation and most likely the base, were lost.

"It looks like whatever they were working on in that bunker, managed to break loose and overrun them and from the sheer volume of these . . . things, we have no chance to offer any real resistance."

I directed my words at Mandy and saw a group of experienced soldiers trying to mount a defense, I recognized the Sargeant.

"Feldwebel Klindt!"

His head snapped towards me and I continued: "Zurückweichen. Zielen sie auf ihre köpfe und fallen sie zurück!"

He nodded and gave the order through to the men with him, with practiced ease they started to fall back, more of the things falling as their heads now became the main target. The general fall-back point was the main gate, which lead to Rhenen, but from the thick clouds bubbling to the sky, that was not the best place to go. Sporadic shots were still fired from all over the base, but from the number of creatures stumbling around, I knew that we had to get away and fast.

I turned to face Mandy, "Ich dachte, du würdest Deutsch sprechen. Kannst du in diesen schuhen laufen?"

Mandy

“Ja, lass uns gehen” Mandy told him, then she looked around and saw an Kübelsitzwagen parked on the side of a building. “Schau, da ist ein Auto” She told him.

They ran towards the car, but a group of zombies moved toward them. They walked faster than the awkward gait Mandy had seen before. All of them looked dead, to varying degrees. Bluish skin tones, pale lips, cloudy eyes and prominent black veins on their faces and necks. The shufflers showed signs of violence; chunks of flesh missing and covered in blood. The quicker sort seemed mostly intact.

Mandy wanted to scream but held back. “Zielen sie auf ihre köpfe” Johan reminded her. She gripped the wooden handle tighter. The zombie’s skin was a pale grey, it hung in tatters in places, It had a blood soaked uniform shirt on. The cloudy haze eyes rolled around in it’s head and then locked onto Mandy. Johan did not let it get any closer. With a gross SMACK, he slammed the back of his gun in its head. It crumbled against the car.

Mandy hit the other one closest to her with the wooden rod. It dented its head in, but Mandy had not hit it hard enough. She used her free hand to hold its teeth away from her and hit it again much harder this time. It fell to the ground.

Another two zombies were on them… “kom en haal me, Arschloch” Mandy yelled. Their hands reached for her, but Johan grabbed one and threw it back. The other one tried to grab her and bite her. But Mandy punched out with her wooden rod. It was solid connection with the zombie’s jaw and the bone broke. But it didn’t even flinch. Mandy felt hands grabbing her pulling her closer. She quickly reverse the stick and hit it with all her strength. The wooden handle was deep inside the zombies skull.

Johan smashed the other zombie so hard it was missing its head. The zombie staggered for a second, and then fell to the floor. Mandy quickly climbed into the auto, her wooden weapon gone.

"Schnell, Schell" Mandy said to JohanView attachment 2138146

Johan

I learned quite a few things very fast, I needed a hand-to-hand weapon, even though these things appeared dead, they were as strong and resilient as a living human being. I curb-stomped the one creature that had fallen back against the vehicle as it started to try and get to its feet. Was it normal to watch a woman like Mandy fight off these creatures and feel aroused?

The way she moved stretched the clothes in certain places, giving me a better idea of what was under the clothing and that was quite a fantastic idea. I started to understand the marks she wore under her make-up, some men have the need to want to dominate over beauty and clearly, she had met a few men with those inclinations.

I got into the Kübelsitzwagen, the engine roared to life, drawing even more of the shambling creatures towards them, he drove off towards the smaller gate further down the fence. The soldiers who saw them started to follow in the same direction, as I looked around, I realized that the base was basically being overrun as the defensive weapons were all pointing outward and not to repel attackers from inside.

"We will need better weapons. You have none and I have two pistols, both of them only have a single clip and between them, I have 10 rounds."

Mandy

“More weapons” Mandy repeated “There is that shovel on the front of this car” I suggested. Johan reached past the front wind shield while driving and grabbed the shovel. He handed it to me.

“I don’t know where any regular weapons are.” I said “The Germans, I mean, your army took them all when they arrived.” I explained. But he was right we needed some more weapons.

“If you are after picks, axes, shovels there is a tool store in town.” I suggested as Johan drove rapidly away from the German base. She thought about what would happen if the zombie got to town. They needed to warn everyone. Then a thought occurred to her.

“Stadsmuseum in town has medieval type weapons, swords, shields, crossbows, stuff like that. Some of the items are reproductions and are in working order.” Mandy suggested. “How are you planning to warn everyone in town?” She asked.

Johan

I looked at her with a slight smile, "I am going to let you tell your friends in the underground resistance and they will spread the word. Then we have to get to radio and inform the war office that the weapon that they have been working on has escaped and are threatening Rhenen and the Pantherline."

I drove the vehicle, not feeling rushed, but I also knew that we needed to get to safety as anything could happen and there were much more people in Rhenen than on the base. My heart sank as I saw dark smoke rising from the town and when we came into view, the crashed army truck explained what had happened.

"Shit! One of the things must have made it onto a truck and managed to attack them in transit. I think the townspeople will already know that there is something very wrong."

Mandy

It used to be such a nice, pleasant town. Then the war, damaged a few of the buildings. Not like what the Germans did in Rotterdam, where the city was bombed flat. These building were damaged by stay bombs, so it was only a few buildings.

Now as they drove through the street the damage was everywhere and caused by the zombies. Broken windows, fires and smoke. But there were very few bodies. Those killed by the zombies turned into zombies. The only bodies they saw were ones with head injuries.

“Magnus van der Gaag, is the leader of the resistance. He is the town banker.” Mandy told Johan. As they neared the bank, Mandy saw two zombies chasing a twelve-year-old girl. The girl was screaming and ran into the theater.

“Quick we have to save her” Mandy yelled as Johan stopped the car. Mandy got out and yelled at the zombies. They turned and ran towards her.

Johan was next to her as they got close. Mandy bashed the shovel into the head of the one attacking her. While Johan grabbed the hands of the one attacking him, and used a kick to collapse the zombie’s knee. Then slammed his gun into it head. It fell to the street and did not move.

Johan and Mandy heard more frantic screams further down the street. As people were fleeing in panic.

“The bank is over there” Mandy pointed at the brick building with closed doors.

Johann

I nodded and motioned for her to lead the way, we left the vehicle where it stood as the bank was close and we could use it when we came outside. Something made me look around and found that the creature I had slammed in the head, was getting up. I realized that the damage had not destroyed the brain, but merely knocked it down for a few moments.

I turned the pistol on it and fired, the report sounding abnormally loud, I turned to Mandy, "Quickly, they will be coming after the sound."

We rushed to the bank, where she knocked loudly and called out in Dutch, finally the door opened and we entered. I found myself staring down the barrels of guns, they were shouting at me, but I did not catch all of what they said. Clearing my throat, I addressed Mandy, "Mandy, could you perhaps translate for me? I don't understand half of what they are saying aside from demanding that I drop my weapons."

Mandy

“HOU JE MONDS!!” (Direct Translation… hold your mouth… or more accurately… SHUT UP) Mandy screamed and everyone got quiet.

“Major Schmidt is here to help. These zombie things are from the Wehrmacht base near Pantherstellung. The Major has some ideas to help defect them.” Mandy explained.

“Moffenmeiden!” Magus van der Gaag yelled at Mandy. Others in the bank yelled “Moffenhoer” at Mandy

“SHUT UP” Mandy yelled again and everyone got quiet. “I said NO to being a Moffenmeiden… but when the German’s killed Jan, my fiancé, right in that street.” She said point at the street. “I HAD NO CHOICE IN THIS MATTER”

“You should have said no, traitor!” Magus pointed out.

“And you should have stood up to them with the other Jews! Magus” Mandy pointed out. The bank was quiet. Magus was Jewish and the head of the bank. Mandy had just outed him in front of a German officer. “You are just as much of a traitor as me. Now let’s fight these zombies, they don’t care if you are Jewish, Dutch or German.”

Everyone in the bank, seemed to be stunned into listening.

Mandy turned to Johan. “Major you can lower your gun now. What is your plan and what do you need?” Mandy asked

Johann

I first looked at Magus and grinned, "Don't worry, your secret is safe with me. Not all Germans are Nazis and not all of us agree with their grim outlook."

I cleared my throat and slowly placed the weapons I had on the ground, this seemed to relax everybody.

"Right, so we will need a defendable position, which this place seems to be, weapons which you do have, and ammunition, which I will guess you do not have enough of. Lastly, a radio."

"Why a radio?"

I looked at the speaker, "To call this in to the war office, they will know about this project of theirs and they will know what to do."

There was a short silence, then the banker spoke up, "You are right, we can defend this building, we have enough weapons, but not a lot of ammunition. The problem is that, a radio antennae, would have given away this position to the Ger . . . ahem army."

I nodded to him, "I understand, I would also want to defend my country against invaders who force my young women to do unspeakable acts or kill them. Where is the radio? I know you have one to speak to the other resistance cells."

"How would you know this?"

I sighed and pointed to my insignia, "I am a major, you don't become a major by being stupid. I have known about your group here, I knew that Mandy would have contact with you as she is a woman who learns various secrets and is not vapid."

"How do we know this is not a ploy to expose all of us?"

I wanted to sigh again, they are wasting time and in that time more of these creatures would be making their way into the town, "That loud explosion you heard earlier? It was the magazine exploding, we are not in the habit of setting loose some sort of undead weapon and blowing up our own bases to out a group of resistance fighters."

There came a cry from one of the women in the back, I could understand something about a person who died. I looked quizzically at Mandy, she translated for me, "She said that her husband just died, he had fallen from a ladder when the attacks started and she brought him here to be safe. Sounds like he had internal injuries."

I nodded and turned to face the men again when another scream went up, coupled with the weird moaning sound, I looked at Mandy, "He wasn't attacked?"

She shook her head and I leaned down to pick up the two pistols as the people fled from the back, a figure rising up from behind the counter, clearly dead and now with blood on its lips.

Everyone was moving and yelling and screaming. Mandy was mad at them. They were Dutch and they needed to start using their heads. Noise attracted the zombies. Mandy tightened the grip she had on her shovel and rushed forward. The zombie was just coming up over the counter. Mandy shovel caught it right at neck level. With her at a full run and all her weight behind her she cut its head off. The head bounced on the counter and then crashed to the floor.

Johan was next to Mandy and smashed the dead woman’s head so hard it oozed brain matter.

“Why did you do that?” Someone asked

“It does not take long for the dead to rise” Johan explained.

Mandy added “You got to hit them like you mean it ….” Mandy said in a low voice to the Dutch women watching her. “Think about them like they are a cheating boyfriends!” Mandy told the women. Despite the tension, her comment brought on laughs. Then there was another scream out on the street somewhere.

“Johan, we have to protect more people. The more people that die, the more zombies we have to fight!” Mandy reasoned.

“We can get more in this bank” He suggested but he knew it would not hold the whole town’s population. “Any other big buildings?” He asked

“I have a better idea.” Mandy said “Cunerakerk, the main church of Rhenen!!” She said in excitement. “It was damaged by a German bomb, but the walls are solid. And the central tower is 83 meters high. A great place to put the antenna. It is the tallest building in town.”

"Do you have a map?"

Soon enough there was a map laid out on a counter and I looked at it for a moment,

"Good, so we are here."

I pointed at the map, "The church is here. We need to get the radio, with the antennae mast and set it up."

Magus pointed at a house, "The radio is there, I can give Mandy the password. Your accent will get you shot."

I chuckled and shook my head, "I know I sound German, so I will not even argue. Are there any other buildings that can be secured and keep a sizable amount of people?"

He pointed out two more structures and I nodded, "Good. Since I know the frequency with the countersigns, I will have to go with Mandy. You will have to secure this building and then send out volunteers to warn the living and get them to these structures, where they can barricade themselves and defend themself. Give out the weapons you can and always aim for the head. Don't stop until you see brain matter. It sounds grim, but I had hit one in the head, but it got up again."

Everybody looked uncomfortable and I took my most confident stance, the one that used to inspire the soldiers fighting with me, "Look, I know that what I am asking of you is a lot. It is dangerous and why would you want to fear danger for the enemy?"

I looked around, meeting the eyes of a few of the men, "Because this enemy is not as much a danger to you, your people, and your country, as those bastards shambling around outside. Now, I don't know how they came into being, I don't know why they exist, but I will not be killed by some strange creature and I will not stand idly by to see them killing innocent people, people who have already suffered and is currently being bowed down under the weight of war. If I still have breath left in my body, I will go out there, I will kill them and I will protect who I can."

This was the part where I would dramatically raise my weapon and order the charge, I could see that I had them spellbound, that most of the men will charge out with me if I did that.

"All I want is to know if you will do what you need to do, to keep your people safe and end this new horror."
