April 21, 2004: Day of Silence
Please understand my reasons for not speaking today. I am participating in the Day of Silence, a national youth movement protesting the silence faced by lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people and their allies. My deliberate silence echoes that silence, which is caused by harassment, prejudice, and discrimination. I believe that ending the silence is the first step toward fighting these injustices. Think about the voices you are not hearing today. What are you doing to end the silence?

How cool, I wish I had known about this. Though it is something that would likely have gotten my fired if I had done it at work.

I'm postig here again to update you with an expierence i had...

I went to applebees with my friends who were also participating in the day of silence... We were all absolutelly itching to talk.. we had paper so we could write down our order for the waiter and we obiviously did not talk the whole time... we showed him the little card we had that explained what we were doing so he'd know what was up... the evening progressed nicely.. than came the end... when he gave us our doggy bags he was like.. "I can talk right...?" and we made a signal for yes go on... and he said "I really respect your cause and what you are doing... the food's on me..." We were stunned and he walked off... So we banded together to draw a cute picture of him smiling and saying "i'm awesome" and under it we put "day of silence, april 21, 2004" and we signed our names and put our numbers with them (he was a cool kid we want his friendship) and wrote a big "thank you, simply your support means more than you can imagine"

On the way home i cried... It was odd how it was so much easier to be silent...

yes..my college did that today..i'm proud to say that a lot of people participated in it :) I think it had a major impact because i saw people who weren't doing it wondering why their friends weren't talking to them..they were getting frustratred and kinda realized the whole point of Day of Silence..I wore mine and it's a really great idea.

wow that is great.

I didn't even know about this then again I pretty much don't talk a lot as it stands except to Dusty. But that so wouldn't have worked because you have to respond when Dusty's grandmother talks or she gets mad.

My high school did this my Freshman year and I participated in it. I was forced to cheat because, even though I had a tag showing I was participating, teachers called on me and made me answer. Other than that, though, I didn't verbalize anything. It really sucked because a lot of people who weren't participating were assholes about it. Some people wore shirts that said "say it outloud, I'm straight and proud". It really pissed me off. They didn't do it after that, so I always forget what day it is. Now that I'm in college, it isn't really practical for me, having to go to class and ask questions about material. The Stonewall Center (the GLBT center at UMass) didn't vocalize anything about, so I forgot. I think it's a really powerful thing, though, if a lot of people do it. To imagine how it would feel to be in an area where no one was talking for the entire day. It would send shivers down my spine.

We had the cards and everything, but to integrate the day with our GLBT week on campus, we did it like the week before or something. THAT was not my decision, and I think that it was dumb to feel that it had to be in our week and that we couldn't network with the national aspect of it. But we did do it from 8 to 5--then, of course, we went and had a big party. *Rolls eyes*

Wow, ammre, that is an awesome story!

I wish I had known about this kind of thing when I was in college. It's not really something that can be done in the professional world, although I do have days when I don't end up speaking with my voice much at all. (I'm a sign language interpreter, so once in a while I do get through an entire day without speaking!)

I'm glad you are doing something you believe in and I applaud you for showing a strength of will and steadfastness for your principles...

But personally, I prefer to speak my mind freely as is my Consitutional right, disapproving society be damned.

Ah, every straight man's dream, a silent woman...but also a lesbian. What a waste! *shakes head sadly*

(DSICLAIMER: Just kidding, don't ban me please!!! I don't really want that kind of woman...but then I'm not straight either, so what do I know? :D )
