Brian Robertson had a long flight to Salt Lake City from DC. The flight wasn't particularly enjoyable, but he made it nonetheless. It'd been five years since he'd last seen his son. Mike. Their last meeting filled with sorrow, grieving over the burial of Brian's wife, and Mike's mom (Mary), of twenty some years.
Mike was born out of wedlock, but Brian and Mike's mom vowed to marry someday and when they did, Brian was the ringbearer. Those were all old memories now. Brian had come to visit, and hopefully put some spark back in his life. Grieving for five years, had finally been enough. Brian was ready to live again! He wasn't quite fifty yet ... he had some good years left in him! What a fine way to start, he convinced himself, than to visit and spend some quality time with his son and Mike's wife of almost seven years, Susan. They were both in their late twenties, and their company would surely inject some special enrgy into him.
His flight arrived early since he managed to connect to an earlier flight in Chicago, rather than wait for Mike to show up, he decided to surprise them, and take a shuttle to their home in the hills.
The shuttle said limo service, but it was more like a school bus, he silently cursed as they drove along, past the city and into the suburbs, where each home was nestled into a seemingly carved out niche of mountain space. One of those spaces belonged to Mike and Susan. The van pulled up to the secluded house, surrounded by a forest of trees, sloping down from north to south. Big large windows surrounded the house, giving the occupant a wonderful view of the sun as it rose in the east and as it set in the west. The southern side protected them from the harsh wintry conditions associated with the area. This area doesn't come cheap, but Mike could afford it. He was a hard working executive in a growing company.
There was one problem though! And I was about to find out all about it!
I popped open the unlocked door and poked my head inside. "Hello?" I stepped into the lavish foyer area, lit only by the incoming sunlight, but bright enough to let me inspect every detail of the greeting area. "Anyone home?" My voice echoed through the house. Finally I heard a female voice from the back of the house.
"Oh my goddness! You're here!" The next thing I saw was a beautiful curvaceous woman, running towards me with her arms wide open, and a beaming smile on her face. Her long hair was flowing behind her until she caught up to me, filnally falling to just above her rounded hips. The hug was tight, more like a squeeze, almost taking the air out of me. "What are you doing here? You weren't supposed to be in till late tonight." She stammered, her eyes were glistening in the bright light, and I was immediately taken aback at Susan's natural beauty, never really having looked at her as anything other than Mike's wife.
I told her about the trip as she escorted me to the kitchen for something to drink. We sat and chatted for a while, and I complemmented her on a wonderful house, that I was sure only she could have decorated so nicely. Again she seemed to glow with happiness and pride. However, when I finally brought the conversation around to Mike, her glow seemed to quickly fade, an energy-sapping force draining her of her life's necessity. I didn't need to pry, when she volunteered, that Mike had lately seemed more married to his career, than to his lovely wife. He was working late hours, taking long trips, many times not coming home on the weekends. Late nights, early morning meetings... all the usual stuff that ruins a marriage.
Trying to change the subject Susan looks at her watch and suddenly realizes, it was near the time, she needed to pick Mike up at the airport. "Look! I've got to go get Mike at the airport shortly. You're more than welcome to go with me. But in the meantime, I need to shower and get changed." We were walking back into the foyer and heading up the stairs. "I'll show you your room. If you want to freshen up, there's a bathroom over there," she pointed to a small bathroom at the end of the hall. "You're room is right here." Susan opened the door and waved me inside. "Get yourself situated, and relax. Help yourself to anything." Her voice sang like chirping orioles back home. I thanked her. "I shouldn't be more than a half hour," she stated as she turned and disappeared into her room.
Five minutes after I heard the water running, the house phone was ringing. "Brian? Can you get that?" I heard Susan yell from within the shower, somewhat muted through the partially closed bedroom door.
I answered. It was Mike. He was surprised to hear I was at the house already! He was glad that I was there and looked forward to spending time with me. But then his voice changed! "Dad. Look! Somethings come up on this business trip, and I won't be in till Monday. But then we'll spend some time together okay? I gotta go, can you tell Susan for me?" I told him I would and sadly hung up the phone.
I guess I was in a half daze, disappointed at not seeing my son for another three days. I walked into Mike and Susan's bedroom to tell Susan. Normally I would have knocked, but I had been so depressed I guess I wasn't thinking clearly. The open bathroom door and the sound of running water, quickly snapped me back to my senses. My eyes, were magnetically drawn to the reflection in the mirror of the naked woman bathing under a waterfall of heavily misting water, lightly enveloped by a low fog of steam. I stood mesmerized for a just a minute before I backed away to the door. The from the doorway, I hollared in. "Susan?"
She answered, and I told her Mike had called. I also informed her of his change of plans. "Son of a bitch," I heard her say as she threw the bar of soap down at the ground.
