I'm a newly (16 months) single guy looking to get back into the companionship game, and wondering what wisdom you allmight have on dating sites. There are so many, from match.com to POF to all the others.

I know POF is free, which is nice, but does it offer quality?

What worked for you, and thanks.

In my personal experience, POF is not good. Most users don't really seem to take it seriously, which I suppose is to be at least somewhat expected given that it's free. I've been on there several times over the years, and I only ever had one POF meeting turn into a relationship (and it was a brief one, because as it turned out, he'd BSed much of his profile).

Match.com has a pricetag to be able to communicate, but you can browse through an unlimited number of profiles before paying to see if there's anyone you're really interested in. If someone you send a message to isn't a paid member, they will still be able to see that you sent it and, of course, your profile, so if they're also interested, they can pay and respond (that's what happened in my case). I met my current boyfriend on Match and we've been together for over a year now :)

I've never been to a dating site, prolly never will. But if you are interested in this subject read Dataclysm by Christian Rudd who founded OKCupid. Fascinating stuff about how dating sites (and every other site) uses the data they collect about us.

I wish it wasn't $12.99 for Nook :(

Ashley Madison

I spent $50 and only had one person who expressed interest. It became clear after an exchange of three emails that we weren't going to be compatible. Other than that, no interest. Most of the time my messages or winks are ignored, but the other responses are all a version of, "Thanks, but not interested."
