Date rape drug and toys

I was watching the news tonight, and there was yet another toy recall. This one had nothing to do with lead, though like so many of the recent recalls have. Instead, this one has to do with the date rape drug.

There is a toy called "Aqua Dots" that if swallowed turns into the date rape drug. This toy has these little bead-like things that you put water on to make them bind together. They look A LOT like candy!!!

There are two kids, that I know of, that are in non-responsive comas after swallowing the beads. Very scary stuff........especially when you consider that it won toy of the year in Australia! I know in the San Francisco Bay Area, reporters were still able to purchase the refills for this toy, so parents, beware.

buy handmade and local stuffies people recycle from old 70's sweaters or carve your own legos - the world is fucked.

They are known as Bindeez Beads here in Australia and even though there have been several children hospitalised the toy was still on some shop shelves as late as yesterday

Lovely news... Yes there were aqua dots at my brother's house, but they've been removed.

What always scares me about these recalls is what about all the people that own, in this case, Aqua Dots and aren't aware of the recall? What about the people that don't speak the language and therefore have no clue that there was a recall? Scary stuff.

Glad to hear that your brother DID hear about the recall and removed them from the house. :)

Hold up!

Why would someone put a date rape drug in a toy? Is it less expensive than, I dunno, air or water?

*scratches head*

I'm really curious.

The coating of the beads undergoes a chemical breakdown if ingested, which the body converts/processes similarly to the date rape drug (BGH?).

Honestly, I can see people rushing out to buy them now. Can you?

Thanks for posting this. I don't personally have kids but its time to start Christmas shopping for the little cousins.

I swear, between this and the growing number of lead recalls, I have no idea what to buy.

LOL you beat me to it :)

I know kids are a lot more sophisticated these days, but mine always enjoyed books, puzzles, pens and drawing paper, games (not computer ones but board and card games), music tapes/CDs....they seemed to get more fun out of these than the latest trendy plastic crap that becomes obsolete after 5 minutes

Sorry to disappoint you, B and T. ;)

As for what to buy kids with all the recalls lately, books were exactly the first thing that came to my mind and are always my favorite gifts to give. What I love is that there were several other people on here who had the same idea and posted it first!! Makes my lil' heart of a teacher and book lover very happy! :)

Bandit58's ideas are true of what my sisters and I enjoyed getting as gifts when we were growing up. I, frankly, can't stand how much time kids spend at computers these days (I know, I'm probably a hypocrit since I'm on here so much ;) ), and I think that far too many of the computer games, along with a lot of the "plastic crap" toys, are far too violent and offer nothing towards increasing a child's imagination.

I know my 8 year old niece loves to play dress-up, and my 10 year old nephew loves anything having to do with art, and they both love to play outside, thank goodness. I would suggest gifts along those lines, as well as Bandit58's ideas and the others that suggested books.

CM, to answer your question, it's GHB. The doctors that were interviewed for the news story about this said that there are chemicals that are often used for two very different things. He used the example of Ethyl Alcohol, and, in this case, the chemical that is GHB is not only the date rape drug, but it's also an adhesive. Very scary stuff, and why it took kids ending up in comas for someone to realize this danger makes no sense to me.
