If we all came from the same source how come I don't see any super intelligent ants around and how come cockroaches and sharks are the same they always have been and why havn't the apes made films like "Planet of the Humans".

Naw Darwin was a jerk!

I happen to think natural selection is a very valuable theorum, however, there are a few "kinks" that need to be worked out.

For instance, I woudn't apply it to humans at all!!!
I am reminded of this daily, while driving down the freeway.

Dear p_p_,

My apologies to Ramlick, dee cole and Jerry Falwell ...That was the stupidest thing I ever heard anyone say.

Oh come one, sure it was dumb, but the dumbest thing you've seen on this bb? Is everyone forgetting the idiot who couldn't find his own dick? Even as comedy it was hopelessly pathetic. Or even better, Ambros thread about writers on this board being sick twisted weirdos just cause he thinks they write sick stuff.

well I guess that if Darwin is wrong like you say he is.. then how did we evolve to what we are today?? instead of still living in the caves or trees..

think about what has happend in the history and where things are going in the future and then re-evaluate your statment please..

Dawin was a jerk!

I placed the same small comment on an English BB for a bit of fun and was surprised at some of the replies.

Apparantly, according to Professor of something at some University or other (I know he exists I saw his web site!) there is a discussion in academia which has been going on for years about the discrepancy in the speed of evolution between Man and the rest. According to those learned people this just shouldn't be.

Which doesn't clarify anything but sure makes the old imagination open up...

Darwin Vindicated
Cracking of human genome confirms theory of evolution
By Arthur Caplan, Ph.D.
...
But none of these headlines capture the most basic, the most important consequence of mapping out all of our genes. The genome reveals, indisputably and beyond any serious doubt, that Darwin was right — mankind evolved over a long period of time from primitive animal ancestors.

Our genes show that scientific creationism cannot be true. The response to all those who thump their bible and say there is no proof, no test and no evidence in support of evolution is, “The proof is right here, in our genes.”

Eric Lander of the Whitehead Institute in Cambridge, Mass., said that if you look at our genome it is clear that “evolution … must make new genes from old parts.”

i suppose you think the moon landing was a hoax also....

I hadn't heard that. I'll look into it.

Just to continue the thought, Creationists are alwasy confusing the word "theory" with "hypothesis", or, at the very least, "educated guess". A "Theory" in scientific terms simply refers to a process for testing a previosuly experiemented and substantiated claim. "Gravity" is a Theory. "The Earth going around the sun" is a Theory. The "Color Blue" is a Theory.

And, it just so happens, that there are very few Theories that have as much supportive scientific data as Evolution, which involves "proofs" from a whole host of disciplines like Zoologoy, Biology, Chemistry, Genetics, etc. etc.

To pooh-pooh Evolution for being a "Just a Theory" is like pooh-poohing that the sun gives heat "Just because it's warm".

I rarely make blanket, be-all-end-all statements about people, particularly when it comes to tolerating faith (which I do), but I just have to say that given the preponderous of proof for Evolution from sciences which have illuminated some several billion years of terran life anyone who still clings to Creationism is, by every account, a fool.

and another thing

Evolution doesn't preclude a "Superior Being" whatever name you want to use... God, Allah, Sheva....

He found something that worked, DNA, and expanded on it, instead of re-inventing it for each species...Thou uninformed plebian...

The sharks that scare swimmers today are not all that similar to the ones that were swimming around when the dinosaurs were here. They are far more efficient swimmers for one thing. And the big ones are specially adapted to hunt marine mammals, with finely tuned teeth and hunting technique.

There is a widely accepted theory (Steven Jay Gould is one of its proposers) called "punctuated equilibrium" which means that a species can sit around doing the evolutionary equivalent to scrathing its arse for millions of years. And then some little mutation or change of environment will send the population into evolutionary overdrive for a little while.

Intelligence isn't the aim of evolution, which doesn't need one and anyway it's way too expensive in terms of food requirements for an ant, who can't grow a big brain anyway because of the way its brain surrounds its own gut.

And a film in which an intrepid orang utan gets lost amongst a lot of strange bipeds until it finds the tiny speck of rainforest that is all that's left of home? It's been done.

Thanks

Thanks Munchin. That's the type of response I was expecting. The professor I mentioned earlier made the most sense to me. He said, in layman's terms for my benefit, that evolution would naturally progress at different speeds and that we as a species just happen to be a wee bit faster than the rest. Why that is though opens up another discussion.

Now wait just a minute.!!

Now wait just a minute. Just because Darwin was a liar and a thief as well as a fraud doesn't mean some of his work did not help unravel some of earth's history.! So he had a few major points wrong. hell, when you steal someones theory
thats the chance you take. And even he knew some of it was wrong. what was he supposed to do.? Say, well shit sorry this theory i stole from my friend and presented as my own
is fucked up beyound repair because you can see why at thus an so places around world that i just came back from.

I don't think so.

Huh?

Read "Darwin's Universe," it explains plausable reasons for why we are the way we are, and certain aspects of the planet that affect how we evolve....

He was a jerk, but not how you meant...

Darwin actually was a jerk in a lot of ways, whether you accept his theory or not. _Evolution of the Species_ has been used to justify racism, misogyny, and even genocide. Like much of the mid 19th century writing, it still smacks of "Manifest Destiny"--the superior beings win. Darwin was, himself, a racist and misogynist, and is on record as claiming that women are primarily breeding sows for men, and that "other" races (read: non-European) are not, technically, human.

All of this does not mean that the scientific theory of evolution is completely unfounded, far from it. Rather, I mean that the link between biology as practiced by Darwin and politics as practiced by Hitler is difficult to shake. Hitler, incidentally, based a good deal of his rhetoric on Darwin--and several other authors, mainly Americans. A lot has been claimed in the name of "science." Take a look at Freud--the founder of modern psychiatry also didn't believe that women were capable of higher thought, he was like Nietzsche and many others of his time on that point.

I was really looking forward to this being a discussion of the man and his personal problems. Anyone wanna play that game--"Who invented or argued something earth-shattering, that was a big jerk in his/her personal life" ? There's lots of contenders...
