"The light emitted by most e-readers is shining directly into the eyes of the reader, whereas from a printed book or the original Kindle, the reader is only exposed to reflected light from the pages of the book," the study’s lead researcher Charles Czeisler, told the BBC. "Sleep deficiency has been shown to increase the risk of cardiovascular disease, metabolic diseases like obesity and diabetes, and cancer. Thus, the melatonin suppression that we saw in this study among participants when they were reading from the light-emitting e-reader concerns us."

Feh! I read myself to sleep on my NookColor many times a week, never noticed a disturbance, etc. It would be more problematic if I had a table lamp on, IMO.

Plus Kindle and iBooks apps these days have automatic night settings - white text on black background. It's terrific. It's the act of reading that keeps me up, not the the diffuse and distributed lighting (as opposed to the point source intensity of bulbs).

Tablets got rid of a perpetual source of contention between my partner about the brightness and direction of night lamps. He always falls asleep with the light on, at which point I have to get up, run arouNd the bed to turn the light off! If I try to do it from my side, he wakes up and the whole comedy repeats! I know, clappers... But tablets made it all go away!
