Dan Wheldon killed in Indy Car race

Why is Indy-Car racing still so dangerous when F1 has reduced most of the fatal type of crashes?

Racing at average lap speeds of 220+ mph is slightly more dangerous than hitting 200 mph as the top speed of a lap that'll also see lows in the 50 mph range (at some F1 tracks even slower).

No one ever was decapitated on a football field...

...no one's ever burned to death on a hockey rink.

Indy car racing isn't a game...
