Damn!

Thank Denmark too...

When the Nazis occupied Denmark they wanted to remove the Jews.

The Danes smuggled the Jews out of the Nazis' way: Danish Jews

Right now we need a similar attitude to Muslims.

OK, some of them are criminally stupid, but the majority are just fellow humans who may need protection against religious intolerance. Granted Guantanamo bay isn't the same in degree as Auschwitz, but there's far too much in common in kind.

And the truly sad part is that the French government has essentially suppressed the story for over 50 years.

good to know there are some truly compassionate people out there.

Because they wouldn't admit that most of France had collaborated in the removal of the Jews.

The UK can't claim clean hands either. We set quotas for accepting refugee Jews in the late 1930s, as did most countries including the US. A shipload of Jews left Germany and wandered the seas hoping for refuge - most didn't get it. SS St Louis The rest had to return to Germany.

Denmark and Sweden had showed true compassion to the Danish Jews.

Just a note to go along with this. Somehow the admittance that Bush allowed and approved of torture got hidden...[mostly due to the fucking news about Obama and Clinton]

In the UK we are now considering being able to sue through the UK courts people AND COUNTRIES that practise torture. That could mean that the British former residents of GITMO could sue the US Government. The US has enough assets in the UK that could be seized by a court.

We could even issue a warrant for Bush's arrest if he sets foot on British soil.

Og

PS. Unlike the US we do not practise kidnapping to bring people into our jurisdiction. Anyone kidnapped so that they can be charged on British soil could successfully claim habeus corpus and leave the country. The kidnappers would face charges in the UK. "Extraordinary Rendition" is not a UK practice.

-quirks an eyebrow- Hate the US much?

Honestly I don't know how Bush got re-elected. However I find myself in a dilemma. I don't exactly support McCain, and this revelation that he supported Bush vetoing the bill to make any form of torture outright illegal seals the deal. However I find myself unable to support the Dems, due to the party splitting itself with Clinton and Obama destroying each other in this election year. -sigh- Hate to say it, but please Gore, run one more time?

Nope. Don't hate the US at all.

Hate the US government's policy on Extraordinary Rendition, waterboarding, GITMO and the one-sided extradition treaty which was ratified by the UK government but NOT the US government. The last allows US courts to extradite UK citizens to face charges at the request of any US court without having to produce any evidence and with no right of appeal. Because the US government has not ratified their side of the treaty US citizens cannot be extradited to the UK without extensive legal argument and appeal.

Those policies make the US unpopular even among its allies and provide real ammunition for its enemies.

Bush's foreign "policy" appears to consist of engaging with both allies and enemies in such a way as to ensure that he pisses everyone off. He's been an unmitigated disaster as president, as far as I'm concerned, and the sooner he exits, stage left, the better for everyone. It will take at least a decade to undo the damage he's caused.

Leaders aside, I think there's hope for the species (which is where this thread started) as long as the majority of us continue to do things--however small or seemingly insignificant--to help others. When too many treat other people as things, we're probably doomed in the long run.
