Italian parents beat up principal over grades
Dad, grandfather of student rough up educator; mobile phone ban also cited

Updated: 1 hour, 35 minutes ago
BARI, Italy - An irate Italian family beat up a principal because they were unhappy with the grades a young relative had received and a ban on mobile phones at school.

Three male relatives, including the father and grandfather of the student, punched and pushed principal Ugo Castorina at the Lombardi middle school in Bari on Saturday, police said.

They were angered by grades on the latest report card and by a recent ban by Castorina on mobile phones at the school he has run for the past 22 years.

Castorina was taken to hospital and treated for mild contusions. Police escorted him back to the school.

“Some people may not like it but standards must be set and rules must be respected if a school is to function,” Castorina told reporters.

They used to beat on me for shitty grades. I'm glad they've finally straightened this out. :D

I actually don't find it too 'kewl.' I mean I can understand the overwhelming reasons why a middle school student needs to have a mobile phone. When you have important business calls coming in through the day [what is the kid, a drug dealer?] you have to keep right on top of things. Of course, a kid with that many phone calls to field can't be bothered to study. Why are they upset because he got low grades? However, they didn't need to go and beat up the principal, they could have done a phone wedgie!

I've heard from a few teachers that they are no longer allowed to fail kids because it damages their self-esteem. There is something wrong with the world.

But to stay on topic... I've always thought that it is ridiculous how much some parent's rely on the child's school to teach them social skills and morality, but now I'm wondering if parents should be allowed to parent children.

And people wonder why I'm a misanthrope.

Let me think a moment. Father of a child being beaten at a grade schoold wrestling tourny runs out on the floor and throws the winning boy out of the ring, then smilingly gives the camera a thumbs up. The brother of a college wrestler runs out on the floor and attacks the wrestlers opponent with fists and kicks. A father attacks a little league coach for taking his son out of play after numberous errors.

Yep. Things are going just fine in American parenting. I see the highest morals on display here.

This is called "Transferance" in psycholgical circles. The parents will never accept the fact that their little brat is a fuck-up. So, they have to blame someone - Who better than the teacher, school, coach, etc. To take any other position is to both accept their own failure as parents and to recognize the limitations of their kids.

Actually, I'm a little confused as to why the principal got the beating rather than the teacher, but maybe Italian schools are different and it's the principal who assigns grade?

Why is this suddenly the principle / teacher's fault?

Has it occurred to anyone that the kid might just have been slightly thick?

Ummm... I think Jenny was being sarcastic. At least I hope she was.

I failed repeatedly when I was in school. Dropped out eventually. Despite constantly testing at about a 150 IQ and reading at a college level when I was nine.

But back when I went to school there were only two kinds of kids, normal and stupid. Due to a learning disability I wasn't normal.

Not saying anything, just noting.

I think I'm gonna go kick my former history teacher's ass. It was clearly not my fault that I never did my damn homework.

I've had a few parents who obviously wanted to beat me up. It's my fault though, what with my silly belief that kids should actually earn their grades.

ROFL. I meant by doing their homework and classwork. I teach middle schoolers, so my students definitely aren't tempting. Now if I ever get to teach college...

Oooh, that reminds me of this page of naked college boys I need to go and visit... poor things need a lot of visits to the website to earn their tuition fees...

Damn, I put this in the wrong spot.

LOLOL

Thanks for the compliment.

It actually is sad though that this is happening. Then again, where I live several years ago a teacher was shot and killed for ejecting a student from his class because the student was talking with a couple of girls and causing a commotion in class. (The David Grunow Case if you're interested in looking it up.)

All of those obnoxious bumperstickers; "My kid is a honor student at phelps conservatory" etc- spawned a few reactionary bumperstickers.
"My kid can beat up your honor student"

A guy on my block had that one. I said; "Does that mean that your kid is a big dumb bully?"

A few days later he'd taken it off his car...

I've seen one of those... on the car of someone who was applying to teach where I work  Incidentally, he didn't get the job. It scares me to think he might have been hired elsewhere though.
