Well, today was the long awaited day when my wife and I had our good friend over for dinner. (No she was neither dinner nor desert.) When we had originaly asked her to come over she had hesitated because of finding a sitter for her kids. I had informed her that I didn't want her to come over without the kids, which earned me a surprised look. She reluctantly agreed. She claimed the reluctance was because of work and getting things doen with her kids, tomorrow is the first day of school for them after the hurricane.

My wife counted on her fingers and came up with five people, ourselves included. She looked at me strangely when I doubled the food requirments but didn't say anything. I know Hispanic families. I was right.

Our friend showed up with her two children as well as one of her four brothers. (I told you I know Hispanic families, especially traditional ones.) I then took step one in shocking the shit out of him.

He climbed out of the car with a neutral look on his face. His job, as we all know, was to remain in the background and protect his sister. Hah and double Hah. I walked straight up to him while my wife greeted our friend, (we'll call her Maria, a nice generic name.) and greeted her with a hug. I greeted her brother with a handshake and a welcome. (Not to mention an ice cold beer when he stepped through the door.) He found himself included in everything that was done and despite himself I'm sure, found himself having fun. Maybe it was because I treated him as what he was, an equal. Or maybe it was because I didn't attack and molest his sister, not my style. Maybe, gasp, it was because I treated him and his sister as well as their kids as family. Whatever it was he had a good time.

Okay, the gory details. We watched a movie Maria and kids hadn't seen before. (Disney, of which my wife has every damned one of them.) We then had dinner, marinated and grilled Chicken with Corn and Baby Carrots. We had one tiny problem, the son lost one of his teeth halfway through dinner. (It was already loose and he was playing with it.) I helped him out, got him cleaned up and dinner continued without a hitch. we finished dinner with an Ice Cream Sandwich for each of the kids and coffee for the adults. (Maria did have an Ice Cream Sandwich as well.) They borrowed a couple of movies, he borrowed a book he had been wanting to read for a while, and they went on their way with an honestly given invite from us to return at any time.

I must say that my admiration and respect for our friend has gone way up after meeting her kids. I know how she got out of her bad relationship. I know how she has been raising her kids basicly on her own since then. Now seeing the kids I have to say without exageration they are the most polite, well mannered, well behaved kids I have ever sat down to a meal with. (They didn't even try to chase the cats.) Yes Sir, No Ma'am, Please, all in their vocabulary. Hell theyw ere even trying to teach my wife Spanish, and succeding.

All in all a great time.

SeaCat,

I dont thonk I have commented on many of the threads you have written, but I thought I would here.

First, I have always enjoyed your writing, straightforward talk etc. Also, you seem like thebest person around here to hang out and have a beer with.

Cheers...

Bholderman,

Thanks.

I try to take care of my friends and family, and I enjoy helping those who fall into these catagories. (I help others but not with the same enthusiasm.)

Again, thanks.

The Cat is awesome. I could totally relax and toss a few back with him. (No promises that Vella and I wouldn't seduce his wife to the dark side, but somehow I think he'd be grabbing the video camera.)

Moved south to get away from the cold, and the cold hearted people I dealt with in New England.

Here in Florida there is a much greater mix of ethnicities, which tends to freak out a lot of people. Me? I find it interesting as well as refreshing. I like differences.

I have few friends, and they know who they are. They know how to find where I live and know they always have a place to stay if it is needed. Not too mention food, if I have food my friends have food. Maybe not what they are used to, but they have food. :D
