In the summer of 1976, NASA's Viking planetary probe photographed a rock 'face' measuring a mile from crown to chin, and a huge five-sided pyramid. A vanguard of scientists have found powerful geometric ratios in the placement of these 'monuments.'

This could be a way of gaining the attention of other races on other planets. Debate over the validity of these photographs has fueled major controversy in the space science community. As the controversy mounts, the mystery remains...until now.

The year is 2019. It is now over 40 years since NASA's planetary probe discovered the Face like structure. The scientific community can no longer deny the powerful evidence that has now accumulated. They believe the Face is a construct left intact over eons of time when Intelligence walked and ruled the surface of a different Mars.

In this year of ano domine, the first manned mission to explore the Red Planet for the prospect of human colonisation begins. The quest will take the mission crew to a time and a place uninvestigated by humankind...until now.

Our future hinges on colonising Mars. Earth is dying, the world's ecology is breaking apart as years and decades of human misuse has impacted on our homeworld.

The Mission

The ARES mission named by NASA, has three main objectives;

* Discover intelligent life on Mars. Uncover the secrets of the Martian civilisation concealed within the Red Planet.

* Explore Mars. The mission's main objectives are four sites;

- The much debated 'Face'.
- The mysterious Pentapyramid
- The Martian City
- The Auxierre Crater

These sites are fairly close together, located within the Cydonia Mensae region of Mars.

The Premise

The ARES encounters no problems in the 9 month transit to Mars. The crew is awakened from deep sleep by the Mission computer as the ARES moves into orbit around the Red Planet.

With the arrival of approval to land the space-ship on Mars, from Houston, the crew begin preparations to land the ship.

Upon entering the Martian atmosphere, an previously undetected forcefield causes the ARES to crash, presenting new challenges to the mission - survival.

All contact with Earth is lost as the forcefield repels any effort to send radio signals into space. The crew are effectively trapped and must now investigate, explore and discover the secrets of the Cydonia Mensae region. For their own survival is at stake.

Depending on the feedback and interest shown by people to this idea, I would kick off the thread sometime in May or June this year.

The above posts draw a rough outline of the plotline. But if there is any interest in the coming weeks I will place more info on this OOC thread.
