Ok, so I've got to reign in the spending. I've already let go the housekeeper and gardner. I'm buying cheaper cuts of meat at the market and doing home manicures and pedicures.

Getting my hair colored at the salon is a big expense. I thought maybe I'd try it at home.

Does anybody recommend a particular brand of permanent color?

My mother always told me that Clairol was better than Loreal. Especially if you use ash tones. Loreal apparently likes to load up on the green.

But Clairol has lots of difference brand names, and I've always liked their semi-permanent shades.

I agree my favorite would be Clairol Natural Instincts...it's semi-perm but colors evenly.

I use anything in a box with the words "deep" and "plum."

I think they're all the same, plus, I don't have the patience or inclination to think otherwise.

Girls, girls! I need permanent color to cover my grey.

I still say go with Clairol...it's not as harsh as some of the others, and doesn't damage your hair.

I use L'Oreal Excellence Creme.....never had a problem with it and my gray disappears!

I prefer Herbal Essence. It's a nice selectoin of colors, works well and doesn't stink to high heaven like most of em. :)

Ruby, I'd go with Clairol. I use one of the mid-priced ones, and I've never had a problem.

Except the cheap gloves they give you are too small, so buy an extra set of dishwashing gloves or something.

I don't know anything about hair colors, sorry. But I wanted tell you that you might want to consider having someone else apply the color, so you don't miss any spots.

Also, after rinsing your hair, rinse the tub out really well. My friend turned mine yellow last time I dyed her hair black.

Oh, and use Windex on the front of your microwave/fridge/stove/dishwasher and in your sink. Just a cleaning tip, since you'll be doing your own. Windex also takes smear prints off of painted walls too.

Thanks girls.

Has anyone tried that new one, Faria? (sp?)

I have natural strawberry blonde hair, I'd been bleaching out for awhile...it turned my hair BRIGHT orange.

Ruby, I've used that one too. They have a very intense shade of red that I love, but I have a hard time with the smell of it. It works quite well too, other than the odor.

that's pretty funny, Girly. I have naturally dark blonde hair, and I've been changing mine to strawberry blonde.

I have so much more fun as a red head...

We always want what we don't have, don't we?
I wish my hair were curly too...*sigh*

ruby,
i often dye my mother's hair for her. she has MS and can't raise her arms over her head to dye it properly. usually i use the loreal, she likes it.
a friend of mine used feria with great results as well.

Hair color

Ruby, You and I have similar coloring. I've had gray hair since I was 20 and hate it! I've recently had pretty good luck with Clairol darkest brown (comes out nearly black on me) that says (on the box front) Especially for Gray Coverage. They don't all say that, so just look out for it. I've found the other brands don't last nearly as long. Good luck!

I usually dye my friend's hair, and we always use Loreal or Herbal Essense , the color comes out really good ... :)

Feria is pretty good. I had really cool Burgandy hair for awhile, it actually lasts pretty well. Clairol is also good, one of my friends really likes that and has used it for years. Herbal Essense is good, but can be expensive (a little more expensive than some since they use 'natural' products). I can't recommend too many hair colors, I am another person who always ends up w/ red hair. Tried to get platinum streaks, ended up w/ strawberry blonde!!

Good luck

I've been using Feria for awhile, i use chocolate cherry and the plum, and they work well, smell good, and last and stay vibrant pretty long.

Are all the Feria colors vibrant? I really try to avoid getting red in my hair. It just doesn't work well with my skin.
