Curious about private writing for individuals

I was surprised when I first came to Lit that there is a 'market' for private writing for individuals who want their own sexual experiences or fantasies told, but don't feel able to do so themselves.

I've been asked a couple of times to do this, but don't really feel capable and besides it might be a bit like being a hair dresser in that you never know if you are doing what the individual wants or even if it's possible! Plus, in spite of doing serious study avoidance by hanging out there these days, I really don't have time to dedicate to any creative writing.

When I relayed this to a friend the first thing out of his mouth was, "Don't give your skill and time away for free! Charge." He's got a point. I would love to have some house painting done and yard work done. I would never expect to have someone do it for free, no matter how good they were or how much enjoyment they got from the activity.

Have you done it? Do you charge? Are you happy to do it for free? Is it enough to just be given a story idea on which to exercise your creativity? You enjoy the challenge?

Just curious about this 'field'. And yeah, it makes me think about those lovely individuals who edit for free just to help struggling writers. I guess I've looked at that more like I would math mentoring/tutoring, or pro-bono legal work, but I could be waaaayy off on that logic.:rose:

Many of my stories were written about actual individuals, including some members of Lit. Busty Jessica was one, and Katie and Gabrielle were two more. I have also written many stories about readers who provided me with descriptions of what they like to do, or fantasize about, and their appearance.

I don't get paid anything for most of these stories, but I do retain all rights to them, just as I do to any other smut that I write. A few of them have been included in porn magazines, as have some other stories that I have written, and I did get paid a small amount for the right to print these.

I find it easier to write about a real person, always a woman, especially if she provides me with a nude pic of herself and details as I mentioned above. I think it's also more fun to write on this basis.

i've tried it once. it didn't work out. the person who wanted me to write a story for them was mute and they wanted that to be a part of the story. i just couldn't do it. i had no idea how to write a mute character in a real way just i just kind of bowed out politely after attempting five or six different versions of the story. they were polite about it, thankfully and i honestly felt horrible, but what can you do? we all have limits.

i've been asked to similar things since, but i usually say no or offer to do it for free, but on the condition that i can post it on my usual websites. that generally puts an end to the discussion. it may sound odd, but i feel more pressure trying to please one particular person than i do when i'm just writing a story that i hope will be read by several thousand. i guess it's the whole shotgun effect aspect. who knows? all i know is it's not for me.

I use real people in my erotic and horror stories. They know who they are and they know the characters are based on them. But I dont write stories for people.

One story that I wrote, Annie's Neglected Pussy, was written for a reader butI changed her name because she asked me to. I have several others like that. I would never use a real name or description if she asked me not to.

What I usually do, if she asks, is write one version using her name, etc. and post another version here using a phony name. Some women like having their real names and descriptions used, and I can accommodate them.

Hmmm... maybe I should just give up trying to write my own stories and have you just write me into stories.

How hot and sexy can you make the name Harriet, BTW? :D

When I think of that name, I think of the old radio program, "The adventures of Ozzie and Harriet" which went to TV as "The Nelson Family."

Sexy is in the ear and eye of the beholder. Some think "Lola" is a sexy name but, to me, it is one of the least enticing.

It is funny how names work and don't work for people. Our class bully was a girl named Sheila. It's unreasonable, but I can't stand that name.

I'm with ya on Lola, and to me for some reason the male name Terry doesn't work. Maybe I just need to meet a lot of really hot Terry's! :D

Marsh and I have done it. Our story "Put Me In, Coach!" is the result of a personal request. I really liked how it turned out, but it was kind of hard. I really wanted to please the person we were writing it for and tried to get inside her head. It didn't work very well. So I ended up just writing it the way I wanted. Marsh doesn't know the person, so I think it was easier for him.

Anyway, this person is a good friend of mine, so I was doing it for free. However, she agreed that we could post the story, and she did pay me with services. Also, on the printed copy of the story that I gave her, we did a little statement saying it was a published work and was the property of the writers and was not to be reproduced.

Overall, it was a pretty satisfying experience. I always love writing with Marsh, and my friend and her SO loved the story. Would I do it again? Probably not.

I wrote a story on request here once--and wasn't all that excited while writing it. It wasn't a fantasy I would have had myself. And the requestor never gave a peep after I wrote and posted it. So that was a last time for me. I get all sorts of requests for stories people want written, though. I politely say maybe someday--and who knows, some of them may have eventually jelled as stories in my mind--or become aspects of stories.

I'm writing two series based on a fan's experiences:

Submission to Andre chap 1 thru 12 and MaryJane's Epiphany chap 1 thru 6....
They are a real couple and the circumstances, events, and situations described are quite factual if somewhat embellished.
I wrote these for these folks as they are fans of my serious stuff.

i actually try to avoid using names of people i know at all anymore even if they are not about them in any way thanks to a friend who accused me of writing a story about his ex-girlfriend which was bullshit. it wasn't about her, the character was nothing like her and, as far as i knew, it wasn't about anything she'd have any interest in. i just liked the name, so i used it. he didn't believe me.

he was a moron.

Quite a few of my stories were written for other people and I don't charge. I love the creativity it brings and is an outlet for me to reduce stress. I would say 12 of my submissions on here were written for someone else or with someone else in mind. I still have about 5 or so that are in works that are for someone else.
I figure if I were to go only on my experiences, my stories would end up being the same old, same old. Many times I get great ideas from some of my readers. I always ask if they'd like their name to be in the story or use a different one. Nine times out of 10 they choose to use their name because they like seeing it there and no one really knows that it's about them.

How could they not comment or say thanks? I comment on your stories I read even though they might be 4 years old! I love your stories ... Though I did wonder why you had to add the ax handle to that one story. Was this just an SR sense of humor gone mad? or was there some deeper meaning I'm too slow to grasp? (highly likely)

Anyway, at the very least a thank-you was in order.

I have had a few readers ask me to write a story for them. I might have used some ideas but overall I found that when someone asked me to write a story the ideas were not something I would enjoy writing. I found that strange considering I have a distinct writing style and have specific story themes I enjoy writing.

I'm too new at this stuff, so I don't even have a 'style' or 'voice' yet, but this was a fear of mine when asked. What if what they think they want isn't really what they want? What if my mind can only see this story in one style, and they were expecting something else? And, honestly, I know it's very green writing, but I put a lot of effort into it, I can't just move through it like SR says he does, and I suspect many experienced writers do, I don't have the practice and I may never have the talent.

I do think a good writer should be able to take some facts and turn them into a story -- given regular, fun and reasonable situations (the mute story would be a challenge to be sure!), kind of like using collected data like a journalist, and I can see how that could be a really fun experience to see if you can make it more than it probably was in real life!

But it still comes back to the question of why our culture encourages and makes it normal for artists to give away their work. (Calling my stuff a 'work' would be a stretch, so I'm talking about all y'all, not me here!)

i'm not sure what the issue is. but these seem to be facts:

there are people who want to tell their experiences, and give it a shot;

they will post without remuneration.

they are writer/editors who'll help such people, for free.

same for fantasies; those who write them; those who edit them.

And there are people who want their fantasies told by someone else.

Some will pay, most will not.

There are a number of writers (see above) who will give a shot at writing another's fantasy and not charge, and post the result at lit, without remuneration.

There are some writers who write up fantasies and porn for money; google for 'custom porn'; some are established erotic writers or other kinds of published writers.
----

Do these facts seem unfair or unconscionable? Are literary 'artists' getting screwed because no one will pay? Well, some are; some always have. That said, the typical porn story at lit, is something like the typical amateur-written software application. Indeed, highly polished apps, like Irfanview, are given away. The market is harsh, and sets 'zero' as the value of lots of these things. As an aside, the New York Times, which is available for free, tried for a couple years to charge for access to the daily postings of their more famous columnists; special 'premium' arrangement. It did not work. All are now available for free.

There was no issue, just curiosity. Also liked hearing others experiences with it.

I did this once. The local group I belong to on Adult Friend Finder was having a benefit for a couple who'd met through the site who were facing some hefty medical bills, and part of the benefit was an auction. With nothing else to donate, I offered a custom erotic story. Someone bid on it and won, and I sent him a questionnaire which gave me the bones of the story. The result was my story "Camping Trip", which is posted here but didn't do too well in the voting because I changed it from first person to third before I posted it, and missed some needed changes.

When I was in college I made a few extra bucks by writing custom children's stories, kind of a step beyond those "personalized" stories where they just plug in a few names into a pre-written story. Mine were written based on questionnaires about the kid's interests, family life, and so on, so each story was completely original and unique to that child. I've often thought about trying the same thing with erotic stories, but I don't know that there'd be a market for it.

An update: On writing stories on request

Two weeks ago an individual sent me a request for a story/collaborative with some guidelines and a deadline....I met both criterion but did not even get an acknowledgement or a 'thank you' or a 'fuck you' so the next time I'm asked I probably won't participate.
As I previously stated: I'm writing two series based on my fan's experiences. These folks have been profuse with thanks and praise. They have offered more insight as well as adventures for further postings.....they get a real kick out of seeing their exploits in print....I'm glad to help, they are very nice people......

If I were you, I'd be writing for these folks until my fingers wouldn't move across the keyboard! Gushing does amazing things, doesn't it? I've gotten a couple great feedbacks that had me smiling ridiculously for two hours non-stop. Seems I would stop posting here, drop out of school, and start writing round the clock since it made me feel so good. Who knew?!

Ahh, but then, for the non-private writer there are the ratings ... and the sobering 'other' comments that keep that humility and doubt in place ... :(

And, it's too bad that you didn't any reply after jumping through hoops on your other story.
