"New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said Monday that the state must start reopening its economy despite most New Yorkers not having received a coronavirus vaccination, saying that there will be “nothing left to open” otherwise."

“We simply cannot stay closed until the vaccine hits critical mass. The cost is too high,”Cuomo wrote in a tweet Monday morning.

“We will have nothing left to open. We must reopen the economy, but we must do it smartly and safely,” the Democratic governor added.

"New York currently does not allow gatherings of more than ten people at private residences. Indoor dining at restaurants is limited and even prohibited in some areas with higher positivity rates."

"During his annual address to the state that kicked off Monday and will continue through the week, Cuomo promised to ensure that millions of New Yorkers are vaccinated and said he would work to revamp the economy this year."



Trump tried to tell every one and yet Cuomo now decides the economy needs to open. What a phony. You New Yorkers have a worm in your big apple!

Cuomo is the arsonist who now wants to be the firefighter. An extra 1 out of every 500 people in New York is dead because he put Covid patients in elderly care facilities.

I'm not an anti-masker, and I get why things are closed down, but that guy effed up and for political reasons got a big fat (metaphorical) get out of jail free card.

In my state (California) they are worried about vaccines expiring (and are almost dead last in vaccines given per million), because the bureaucrats are managing the vaccine rollout on political considerations. In a week or two, the deaths per million will be the same as Florida.

So the vaccine is being distributed, and the Covid restriction got the country through the pandemic without health care systems being completely overwhelmed.

With these two facts in mind, it seems Governor Cuomo's timing is perfect for announcing the opening of the economy.

It's like some idiots don't remember all the efforts to "flatten the curve" to get the country through to when a vaccine was available.

News flash: A vaccine is available: Health and safety measures have successfully flattened the curve, (although sociopathic non-compliance has negatively impacted their effectiveness.): Stimulus money has been allocated to help with the economic impacts and the continuing fight against the virus.

Opening the economy NOW makes sense, though it should still be a closely monitored process, with continued safety protocols.

Reviewing the evidence
We asked Fred Piccolo, a spokesman for DeSantis, for evidence to explain the governor’s claim that cases in states that are locked down are increasing twice as fast as in Florida.

Piccolo cited a New York Times state-by-state analysis, updated Nov. 30, showing which states have businesses that are mostly closed, which ones have no restrictions, and which ones are “mixed.” The Times also published a map showing states with stay-at-home orders or advisories.

Piccolo then used the Covid Act Now website to calculate the number of cases and hospitalizations per 100,000 residents in some of the states with more stringent restrictions.

We checked the numbers ourselves. We focused on the states that the Times had cited as enacting the most stringent restrictions for either businesses or residents as of Nov. 30, as well as the states that had a medium level of restrictions on both businesses and residents. All told, 10 states qualified for this group of states with high coronavirus-related restrictions. (Our list of 10 states was slightly different from the one Piccolo provided, but not substantively so.)

Broadly speaking, we found that Florida’s record, at least as of the beginning of December, compared favorably with most states across the country, including those with tighter restrictions. Specifically, in comparisons of coronavirus cases deaths and hospitalizations per capita, Florida ranked among the best, and better than some of the more highly regulated states.
