What exactly is "cube steak", to you?

A flavorful but tough cut of beef that has been sliced thin and mechanically tenderized?

The same thing as a "sandwich steak", or a "minute steak"?

Or is it (as apparently defined by my local butcher): a less tender cut of meat that has been diced for beef stew (much to my surprise as I unwrapped the paper before I started cooking dinner tonight)?

Just curious to learn regional differences in defining this term And yes, I realize this question could elicit some innuendo-laden replies, which would be just fine.

Ha! Usually the first one.

so what did you do???

Tough cut that has been tenderized.

Maybe he switched orders with someone else? Think how surprised they would have been if they were wanting to make stew. :)

Since I didn't have time to make beef stew yet today, it's sous vide-ing in the slow cooker overnight and we are having scrambled eggs with roasted cauliflower tonight.

Good recovery!

Did you recently move? Are you some new place where language is used differently?

Or could it be he was not familiar?

It is odd...

I don't know. This is part of our side of beef order... and there are a whole lot of "cube steak" packets in our freezer right now. Lots of beef stew in the future.

I scaramble an egg and milk in a bowl... take a cup or two of flour and add things like salt, pepper, a little garlic powder...usually things to add a little flavor. Put some oil in a skillet, dip the cube steak in the wet stuff and then the dry... and fry it. I usually serve it with mashed potatoes, gravy and rolls.. along with whatever veggies you like.

It's a good ole hillbilly meal. :)

This is what I was planning on doing, approximately (with some sweet onion fried in with everything) and what I was craving. Oh well.

The second one here in Australia

+1... Cube tends to indicate a 6 sided roughly square object to us upsidedown folk.

Cube steak is usually chuck and trimmings that are tidied up and cut into chunks for stewing/gravy.

The tenderised type of shit quality cut is usually called bbq steak and is made by processing the round through a tenderiser.
