At 32 dollars a week.

But remember, those huge heating bills you pay in the winter, well, toss them away forever. Yes, a tropical paradise with one of the highest literacy rates in the world right at your back door. And you'll find no capitalistic bullshit in our libraries, No Sir re Bob. Need medical care, no problem, from the cradle to the grave, think of the greenbacks you'll save.

With that kind of security, who needs freedom?

Here comes "Well, Castro did some good things."

I can certainly think of more good things Castro has done than Bush...

At least Fidel doesn't look after the money boys.

He hasn't any...

Right PP. When the USSR was writing 6 billion dollar checks to Castro, you think he didn't get his cut?

Absolute nonsense. Cuba can trade with every other country in the world. The USA is NOT the only country in the world.

People from the UK go to Cuba on holiday!

Sorry I was under the impression that the trade embargo was to impoverish Cuba out of existence.

I usually somewhat agree with you, but this one makes no sense. Yes, Castro was put in a position where he had to align with the USSR but he seemingly cannot change from their ways. The checks have stopped coming in so he might want to consider a trade in venue. It is a shame the grudge he has from 35 years ago continues to hurt his peoples.

I will side, however, with those that think it is high time to drop all sanctions against Cuba. Would go a long way in repairing relations,,,

The July 28, 1997, issue of Forbes magazine lists Fidel Castro as one of the richest people in the world, with a net worth of $1.4 billion.

And who says communism doesn't pay.

It's a matter of working out exactly why the sanctions are still in place.

Most Americans including the Government I'm sure would like to drop them.

Search the internet for the United Fruit Company and the influence it had and still has (although it's changed it's name now) in Latin America and specifically in Cuba after Fidel's revolution.

Then check who the Directors of the Company were and which American politicians in the most senor posts of of the land had financial interests in the United Fruit Company and slowly the picture becomes clearer.

Or failing that read through this Literotica thread...

the reason they are still in place is for he will not forgo communism and the leaders of the Congress were young adults during the Cuban Missle Crisis. They remember how he nearly allowed a nuclear war and until they die off, the sanctions probably will not be lifted, sadly. Is it all his fault, no, but it is not all Americas fault either. To loosely place blame based on a bias is fool hearty at best.

Most people in the UK would like to get shot of them.

We'd never heard of them (The Falklands) until Maggie Thatcher though she needed a boost in her ratings and went to war over them.

Most of us thought they were a group of islands off Scotland...

Where did you get this idea from? I'm perfectly happy with the Falklands until the people who live there say they want to be Argentinian.

Only the English thought they were islands of Scotland.:D

To my mind Khresvhev had a very valid reason for putting nuclear weapons on Cuban soil.

The Soviet Union was completely surrounded by American and American allies' missiles aimed at her. Cuba gave her the opportunity to play tit-for-tat.

If it hadn't been Khreshev's maturity and common sense in backing down over Kennedy's threats then there would have been a nuclear war.

But it was the Soviet Premier not the American President who saved the world...

And what's the missile crisis got to do with the United Fruit Company?

I reckon even our own Government wants to get rid of them now.
All those billions being poured into islands which do nothing but give a safe haven for wildlife...

I am not debating wether or not Russia needed the missles there. For the record however, you are correct in the assumption it was a great move by Khresvhev, very tatical, and yes Kennedy was about stupid enough to hit the damn launch button. The reason I brought up the missle crisis is to show the reason older american politicians will not allow Cuba to become a trade partner. I am not agreeing with this at all, times have changed, bothe these old coggers and Castro need to change with them

The Cubans changed their economy to a serivice one a few years ago, after the fall of Communism, and Castro has permitted some limited private capitalist practices like street markets.

But with the downturn in tourism following 11 September even that fledgling change is now suffering...

As you've probably never visited Cuba I should imagine it would be quite hard to make a decision based on your own Government's propaganda...
