Critique BEFORE I submit? Where?

Where can I cut and past a story that I have NOT submitted to literotica in order to obtain some direct and free-flowing feedback.

I like the firing-line apporach to feedback, blunt and honest.

I have a 4,000 word story that I think is ALMOST ready for submission, but I would much rather other eyeballs tell me that they think of it... the good AND the bad.

Where should I post as to not piss off any of the veteran posters? Not in story feedback, as its for feedback on stories previously submitted. But where?

Thanks,

Welcome! :rose:

You can ask to have it workshopped in the Story Discussion Circle. Keep in mind that it is generally expected that an author responds and critiques stories for others before asking for the favor for themselves.

I've been lurking for a long time. Years in fact. I don't need it workshopped, I believe its past that point, not to mention that the list for workshopping is about mile long, and would take months to be featured.

My stories are generally complete in one sitting of feverish typing, and rarely do I ever return to a failure because I write by feeling and once something has set me off, it all comes pouring out in one go. Once that train of thought, or feeling is gone, I almost never look back.

I'm one of those writers that can't type a workable sentance if forced, but can write a dozen pages in an hour or two, unless I get interrupted. :(

I guess it's both a gift and a curse...

I just need a firing line that tells me if its a failure or a go to post. I'll post it in a few days either way, I just might do some simple things to it before then if I need to clarify something based on input from others. Or nix it completely if it stinks.

This particular story is a test story, to see if I'm around the same calibur as the other writers here. I have zero ability to judge my own work, as I tend to re-read and consider it a failure almost by default.

It's been posted on some yahoo.group websites and gotten a variety of comments. 99.9 and 9/10ths of them are near worthless, consisting of "Yeah, bust her ass" or "Cool" or "thanks, good stroke"...

I couldn't give two shits unless somebody tells me WHY it was a 'good stroke' or was 'cool' or 'what about her was the best' etc, etc.

Then there is nowhere on Lit to do that. If you put it on Story Ideas or Author's Hangout, the moderators will pull it so fast you won't even have logged off.

ANd then there is the other problem: one reader's failure is another's triumph.

solution

I'd say post it anyway, THEN link to it at the Feedback forum.

They do just about the kind of critique you have in mind, particularly when you ask, in the leadoff post, for candor.

If it seems to have flopped, it can be removed fairly simply. For us mortals, a rewrite or even just a bit of a spruce-up could be done, but you will be either leaving it or removing it.

Removal of a story: This thread discusses the ways it's done.

Actually there are two different areas in Story Discussion. One is for stories already posted another is called Workshop for stories not posted yet.

On the workshop side there do not seem to be any stories pending nor have there been since Rumple's a bit ago. I would PM Pure, you will find his posts in Story Discussion and ask how long. I have a feeling it could be quite quick. Of course there is the return the favor to other authors as part of that forums make up.

I mentioned the above, but it didn't go over so well. Hopefully, you're right and the reason may be due to the misunderstanding about the waiting list.
