Is the age of 20 too young for a midlife crisis ?
My name is Steeves. I am 20 years old. A young Black man living near Boston. I am also bi, as you may know. I graduated high school in the summer of 2003. In september 2003, I started going to BSC, it's a small
private two-year college in Boston, MA. Ever since I was a kid, I wanted to go into law enforcement. I wanted to study Criminal Justice at BSC. Unfortunately, my family had other plans. They changed my major from
criminal justice to computer & internet management. I spent two years studying something I hated and didn't graduate.
This year, I decided to try something new. I found this community college in Charlestown. I decided to apply. I want to study criminal justice there.
I want to graduate from there and then go onto the Police Academy. I want to be a police officer.
Ever since I was little, I hated injustice. I wanted to take on those who hurt others and broke the law. I plan on realizing that lifelong dream. My family knows that I'm back in school but no one knows what I am studying. If everything goes alright, I will have an Associate's degree in
Criminal Justice by the summer of 2006.
What complicates my life ?
Let's see. I was born in Haiti and I came here in 1999 when I was 14. I went to high school in Massachusetts. I live with my uncle, aunt and cousins in a big house in a town near Boston. My family is made up of unpleasant people. My sister is a sociopath with violent tendencies.
My aunt is a manipulator. My uncle is passive-aggressive. My cousins are annoying. I am just one guy stuck in the middle. I think that they suspect that I am bisexual. They've even asked me. I haven't told them.
Last year, I had a thing with a girl I had strong feelings for but it ended badly. She ditched me like yesterday's news. I don't much better luck with the men, either. As for my family.... Why do I stay with them ? I don't have my legal papers yet. It's an Immigration problem.
We've hired a lawyer. We've filed the case. Unfortunately, I haven't yet become a U.S. resident. I don't have ANY legal papers. I walk around with my school ID, health card and library cards in my wallet. That's it !!!!
I want so badly to get my legal papers straight and go into law enforcement.
I am very sympathetic to those who NEED help yet don't need it, such as male victims of domestic violence. I've done volunteer work for such
an organization. The Battered Men's Helpline or www.batteredmenshelpline.org
I want to get out there and make a difference. As for my new school, they have accepted me and want me to register for classes. When I came by, they asked for certain types of identification to prove that I do live in Massachusetts. I've been here since 2000 !!!! I've showed them letters sent to me, my transcript from the other school, but they want to see something like a green card or something. I don't have one yet !!!
Unless I can show them the proper documentation, they will consider me an International Student and charge me $ 3000 a semester instead of
$ 1200, which is the discount in-state students get.
How will I figure my way out of this mess and realize my dream ?
