As loud and garish as the casino floor could get it never took long for Luke to assimilate the loud noises and flashing lights. There was a rythem to it, a pattern in the payoffs, Luke called it the song of the slot machines and he could almost feel when the next payoff was coming. Luke stared at the machines a moment longer and then dismissed it. Either he'd figure it out or it was too random to nail down.
He was here for poker, not for slots. Nothing wrong with slots, besides the odds, but poker kept him sharp, reading people and being unreadible, stuff his powers didn't cover. Oh yes, Luke had powers, vast powers. Powers beyond mortal comprehension. Well, not quite. Luke could identify patterns and compute how the sequence would continue, a power that identified itself in spanish class when he went to bed one night and woke up fluent. His pattern recognition abilities translated over well to math and other languages but didn't help at all in history and most other humanities, which really helped him pinpoint his abilities. That and the news.
Superhumans were cropping up on the news. The real news, not the National Enquirer. Some powers were silly, like the guy who could smell better then a dog. Some were fairly cool like the guy who could fly. Most of them clamored to the talk shows aching for their 15 minutes of fame. Luke knew better. No one on earth knew he was a super and no one needed to know. Openning their big mouths had been what got the guys in "Office Space" in trouble.
Operating in secret Luke had built a life for himself outside the law. With his powers he could write computer code better then his native english. Hacking into a business and leaving a virus that sent unused monies to a caiman's island account was easy as pie. Millions of fractions of a penny added up quickly enough.
Poker player was his cover. He wasn't the only American who got into the poker craze and tried to grind for a living. As far as the IRS was concerned he was just another schlub who'd seen "Rounders" too many times. He'd actually seen "The Usual Suspects" too many times and fancied himself as something of an up and coming Kaiser Soze.
Luke knew that the supers were the key to his success. If a normal man would rob a convenience store if he was desperate for cash, what's to stop a super man from robbing Walmart?
That's why he was back in Vegas. He was looking up and old friend. A con artist who men just couldn't seem to resist. If she got his email she should be here any minute.
Rose had a very kind personality but she wasn't the kind of woman people would want to screw with. She was strong in every single way and had a big heart when it came to her friends. She had gotten an email from Luke, a friend of hers who she has had a crush on but said nothing about it, not wanting to seem rather girly since thats not the kind of woman she was. She was a woman yes but didn't wear dresses or skirts. She arrived where she was supposed to meet Luke and she spotted him and smirked.
Oren was what you might consider a bit of a goody two shoes, but she'd always say she just had a conscience. They called her the sleeping prodigy. Mostly because, although she ended up sleeping through half her classes, she always had top scores in all of them. A break from school was coming up and she honestly couldn't wait. Most would think she was excited because she had plenty of new books to read or because she could sleep all she wanted, but in reality it was for a far mor interesting reason.
She was always tired for one reason.. Every night she became the Mage, mysterious city spectator and vigilante. Seeking truth and vengence for her parents. Yes, at night, the city was her playground.. She was ruthless and merciful, harsh and gentle. No one in the city ever knew the true gender or motives of this mysterious shadow and she rather liked to keep it that way.
She was eagerly awaiting her hours of patrol. Her regular life was boring. Sure her alter ego might have been tad egotistical, but it was better than being a nobody most of the time.
Harlan was working in Reno. It was a small time gig being an acrobat he knew but he was mostly stalling for something big later. Everyone had a heist going, and word usually got out soon enough. You needed a greaseman, Not a teleporter, But someone who could actually do his job, You called him. He didn't fly, he wasn't nightcrawler, But he was damn good at what he did. And for stealing, good was far better than flashy any day of the week.
Still. Being in the middle of real work kinda sucked. Harlan held himself up on a rope by his ankles and tumbled down, one leg at a time till he flipped to the ground and bowed, Catching a great glimpse of all the asses on the showgirls.
"At least the scenery was nice."
{waiting to be picked up. Just walk up and offer him a job.}
Jim 'Bushido' Brown sighed and looked around the office bored as his Captain laid into him again. "AND YOU CAUSED 800,000 DOLLARS IN DAMAGE TO THE CITY!" The Captain screamed his face going completely red. "YOU'RE A LOOSE CANNON AND YOU'RE OFF THIS CASE! ARE YOU LISTENING TO ME?!?!" Bushido wasn't listening to him really, rather gazing at the vein in his forehead that looked like it was about to burst. "You can't take me off a case I already solved chief." He said sarcastically with a smile. "YOU THINK YOU'RE HOT SHIT DON'T YOU!? BUT YOU'RE DONE HERE! I WANT YOUR BADGE AND YOUR GUN!" Bushido cringed slightly at that, ah well, he knew his stint here couldn't last forever. He stood and pulled off his badge, hucking it onto the desk. "There ya go Cap, but I ain't turning in my gun." He said, walking away as the Captain continued yelling at him. He smiled as he ran his afro pick through his hair. "I'm too good to work here anyway." He said as he walked out of police station.
"You got fired again? What is this like six times now?" Greg asked and then oofed loudly as Bushido kicked him hard in the stomach, sending him flying. "You're not concentrating man, you fightin' like a punk today." Bushido said teasingly. "And yeah Captain was pissed about my 'unorthodox' methods again." He said chuckling slightly as he easily avoided Greg's punch and grabbed his wrist, twisting him to the floor. "Well you'll get rehired in another week when they realize they can't take down the big guys without you" Greg said, rising slowly, rubbing his wrist. "I don't know why I agree to do this shit with you... I've been fighting for near five years now and I'm still nowhere as good as you." He said, straightening his black belt. "Yeah, well you shouldn't be the one complaining, it'd hard to be this talented and look this good." Bushido smirked as he stopped to mug for a moment. "As for the job, fuck it, I'm done being a chump for some by-the-books operation. I'm going into the private sector. Bushido Brown, merc for hire. Oh yeah I like that." He smiled as he jumped forward, delivering a hard snapkick to his friend's chest, sending him backwards, followed by a sweep that took his legs out from under him, depositing him flat on his back. "You dead again Greg!" He said smiling, helping him stand.
Luke smiled at Rose. The con was her game, and anyone and everyone who looked in her general direction could see why. Rose shone. Put her in a crowd and she would be the firsst one you saw. Rose had that je ne sais qua, that charisma that inspred, that beguiling intrigue that men, and the occaisonal woman, couldn't resist. And best of all, Luke was pretty sure, she didn't even know she had it.
"Hey back. Walk with me." Luke started walking off the casino floor, leading Rose through the crowded hallways toward the auditoriums, specifically toward the auditorium where Harlan the magnificent was performing.
"I've got a job I think you'd be perfect for. The bad news is it's got a huge pay off in the realm of 100 million a piece, the good news is it's probably impossible and never been done." Luke held a door open for Rose, let her walk through and followed close behind her enjoying the view of her shapely rear.
"Oh yes, and if we get caught we'll probably get executed, if not by the US then by the UN. Especially the French. So if you're in it's one-hundred percent, loose lips sink ships and could probably get us killed." Luke stopped, they were in front of a theatre, there was a line for tickets.
"You in or out, youve got thirty seconds or so to decide Rose."
She walked beside him, it had been so long since they had seen each other, they were great friends and always partners she smiled at him. "Sounds good to me, every job I do I could be killed for, but with my stealth and skill its impossible for them to catch up with me, im not saying im invincible because I know im not, but of course I cannot turn down this job Luka, you know me well enough to know that, we are friends and partners after all" She ran her fingers Thur her hair and looked into his eyes.
Luke looked into Rose's eyes, searching for a hint of fear or reservation. He'd warned her just how dangerous this was going to be, and she was an adult, she could make up her own mind.
"Good." Luke smiled and lead her into line, making small talk about nothing, being very vague, the innane chatter used by conmen to keep calm and blend in. He bought them two tickets for the show and they sat, fairly close. As Harlan the magnificent landed from his last jump Luke caught his eye and nodded. They'd worked together once before, a few years back. Harlan had crawled through a vent not much bigger then his head to heist a jewel. Luke had worked as the frontman on the job, setting up a gem show at a fake office to pull 90% of the employees out of the building. Luke hadn't shown his hacking skills in that, he was always careful to make sure no one knew about his powers.
Harlan seemed to recognize him. Luke stood, walking out with Rose. They went backstage and waited outside Harlan's dressingroom. Luke coached Rose on Harlan while they waited.
"This guy is amazing. He's light as a feather and can squeeze himself pretty much anywhere, like he's got hollow bones he can dislocate all at once. Just amazing. Picks locks like they're not even there. If I can't convince him Rose, I want you to talk him into it."
She looked at him and listened to what he said "Well so much for me being amazing" She said but only in a kidding manner did she say it. "Why would he listen to me my friend, we do not know one another" She crossed her arms. "Of course I would do as you ask" She had a very kind look on her face, she was a siren really, a woman who could do what he wanted because that is how she was, a beautiful voice and body come a very long way in this line of work.
Oy that was a long night. He had spotted Luke very quickly and had wanted to go out and talk to him all night long. But the show. He had finished in a hurry, Doing the best job possible. If Luke were here then there was only one reason for it. A job. Smoothly he wrapped himself in a robe and And got ready to come out to talk. He had a pretty girl with him So Harlan smoothed his hair back quickly, and walked out.
"Luke it has been a while. Listen come into my dressing room, and I'll give you an autograph. I assume you have some business to discuss."
Harlan closed the door behind them as he ushered Luke and the gil into his small dressing room. He took a quick seat. "So do you have business to discuss? Did you think of a new job? Can only assume that's why you're here, is you did. So give me the particulars, I'm looking for work."
