OXNARD, Calif. (AP) — An unexplained inferno raged through a dive boat anchored near an island off the Southern California coast early Monday, leaving at least four people dead and more than two dozen others missing after the gutted vessel sank.

Four bodies were recovered within hours and all had injuries consistent with drowning, said Coast Guard Lt. Cmdr. Matthew Kroll.

The tragedy occurred aboard the vessel Conception sometime around 3 a.m. off Santa Cruz Island, part of a chain of rugged wind-swept isles that form Channel Islands National Park in the Pacific Ocean west of Los Angeles.

"Right now they're conducting shoreline searches for any available survivors," Coast Guard Capt. Monica Rochester told reporters at a brief news conference at Channel Islands Harbor in Oxnard on the mainland.

The Coast Guard said the vessel was believed to have carried 38 people, including five crew members who jumped off soon after the fire ignited. "The crew was actually already awake and on the bridge and they jumped off," Rochester said.

there seems to be something about no firefighting equipment on board at all, either

Mayday call dispatcher asked Conception crewmember: "Can you get back onboard and unlock the boat?"

From CNN's Amanda Watts

In audio from a mayday call from the Conception, a Coast Guard dispatcher from Los Angeles questioned a Conception crew member about whether passengers were locked onboard the vessel.

"Can you get back onboard and unlock the boat?" the dispatcher asked.

In another question, the Coast Guard asked if there was an "escape hatch for any of the people onboard."

In audio from Broadcastify, the Coast Guard dispatcher also questioned the crewmember about firefighting equipment onboard.

"You don’t have any firefighting gear at all? No fire extinguishers or anything?”

The crewmember’s responses are not audible in the recording.

Earlier today, Truth Aquatics, the company that owns the Conception, did not provide comment. CNN is continually reaching out.

Captain Monica Rochester with the US Coast Guard said earlier today that “the vessel has been in full compliance.

"We are working deliberately with the vessel owner/operator who is with us at the time," she said.

This smells more like a crime than an accident (I suppose it could be both).

Information is still developing. Some media reports on what happened have already been proven to be wrong according to eyewitnesses.

These reminded me of another scenario when some Syrian children died in a housefire, the parents having managed to escape.

The circumstances elicited similar speculations, this time of parenticide.
Can't blame the public this time, even if they were imo wrong. The scenario was too horrifying and unusual.

I see that the investigation is still dragging on:

You don't have to care, but you don't have to be a piece of shit either.

The story I read made it sound like the crew simply couldn't do anything so they bailed, which is pretty much what anyone would do if that were the case.
Sounds like the fire was so intense there was no chance anyone could do anything.
Of course that doesn't explain how it started so even if all were true and the crew was right to save their own skins, someone still could have set the fire for some reason.
Or just a shitty accident. They do happen.

true!

but Obama could have saved all instead of buying a $15 million home...NO?

That's the truth of these stories...

A mayday call revealed one side of the harrowing discussion between a Coast Guard dispatcher and the Conception's captain. Only the dispatcher's words were captured, but it provides insight into the panic the captain was experiencing.

After the captain apparently reports a fire and provides a location, the dispatcher is heard saying, "And there's 33 people on board the vessel that's on fire, they can't get off? ... Roger, are they locked inside the boat? ... Roger, can you get back on board and unlock the boat, unlock the door so they can get off? ... Roger, you don't have any firefighting gear at all? No fire extinguishers or anything?"

Later in the conversation, the dispatcher asks, "Was that all the crew that jumped off? ... Roger, is the vessel fully engulfed right now ... Roger, and there's no escape hatch for any of the people on board?"

Question: why was the door locked? Is this standard for such boats?

Both said the sleeping area is comfortable but tight, however, with bunk beds stacked next to one another on the lowest deck. Coming up to the top deck to get off requires navigating a narrow stairway with only one exit.

If the fire was fast-moving, Reid said, it's very likely divers couldn't escape and the crew couldn't get to them.

Coast Guard records show all safety violations from the last five years were quickly addressed by the boat's owners. Some safety violations were related to fire safety. A 2016 inspection resulted in owners replacing the heat detector in the galley and one in 2014 cited a leaky fire hose.

That type of design is inexcusable on a passenger craft.

Obsessive TDS is super strong with this one.

Who would have known, jaF0 is a maritime engineer and expert on naval craft design and safety.

And Butter's, a preeminent authority on fire safety, who knew?
