Got my first quarter results from a growth fund I'm investing in (nice ROI...thank you President Biden).

The fund manager, Ron Baron, offered his usual commentary on the state of the market. He was much more upbeat than he normally is (which is truly saying something) and said something pretty profound:

"The Covid vaccine is America's first 'Sputnik' moment of the 21st century"

The 'Sputnik' moment, of course, was when the major powers of the world suddenly refocused themselves on the Space Race, and reaped technological benefits for decades to come.

The Covid vaccine's delivery system, mRna transport, has vaulted from a "good in theory but untested" plateau to "the wave of the future". mRna transport is now the standard. "Live virus" vaccines are dead. Synthetic vaccines are here now, have a much higher effective rate over traditional vaccines (~95% now compared to the former industry success standard of 55-60%).

Going forward, flu vaccines should be more effective. New vaccines can be put together in months, not years, which take a lot of guesswork out of predicting which annual flu strain will become pandemic. The lead time for prediction is down to months, not a year.

The mRna vehicle also opens the door to delivering other forms of medicine, which overall leads to an improved quality of life worldwide.

If the developers of the mRna delivery system, Dr. Ozlem Tureci and her husband Dr. Ugur Sahin, do not receive this year's Nobel Prize in Medicine, then there is no God. They have endured two and a half decades of ridicule and neglect, and they have now reaped the fruits of their persistence bigly (they are now on the Forbes billionaire list).

The scientific world has undergone a seismic change, and most of the world didn't even know it!
