What are your favorite cover songs, for greatness, lunacy, or sheer daring?

Built to Spill - I Try(Macy Gray)
Off the wall, doesnt fit at all, took balls.

Sex Pistols - Substitute(The Who)
More snarling than the original.

Social Distortion - Under My Thumb(Rolling Stones)
Mike Ness knew about that revenge feeling more than Mick.

Ministry - Lay Lady Lay(Bob Dylan)
It works, almost despite itself.

Tori Amos - I'm On Fire(Bruce Springsteen)
She captures the feeling of an empty bed.

Jane's Addiction - Rock N Roll(Velvet Underground)
Lou's Autobiography becomes Perry's.

Tricky - Black Steel in the Hour of Chaos(Public Enemy)
Reinvention does justice to original.

Rage Against The Machine - Maggie's Farm(Bob Dylan)
Is Socialism bad or good? I forgot.

Poe - My Lips Are Sealed(Go-Gos)
Go figure, better than original.

Cowboy Junkies - Sweet Jane(Velvet Underground)
Overly innocent but they left the bridge.

Babes in Toyland - All By Myself(Eric Carmen)
Wacked. I miss the Babes.

Anything off of Metallica's Garage Inc.

Anything Weird AL does ^_^

Dope-You spin me (right round)- I don't know the origional artests..

Dope- Fuck the Police-NWA

Off the top of my head:

Anything appearing on Elektra's Rubayat 2 disc (covers) collection. If you like contemporary music this is a REQUIREMENT. Period.

Follow For Now--She Watch Channel Zero (Public Enemy) Even better live.

Teddy Pendergrass--I Wanna Make It With You (Bread) Makes you completely forget about the original.

System of a Down w/ Redman--Shame on a Nigga (WuTang Clan) I can't believe this wasn't released as a single.

Luther Vandross does almost nothing but covers and makes you absolutely forget the original artist. Carpenters who?

Lisa Stansbury - Never Gonna Give You Up (Barry White)
The sultry jazz siren took a funk grovoe song my the King of Deep Voices and made it her own.

Guns and Roses - Sympathy for the Devil (Rolling Stones)
A ballsy remake, well done. Even more evil than the original.

Sheryl Crow - Sweet Child O'Mine (Guns and Roses)
Kill her. Kill her now. Burn the body. Scatter the ashes.

The Cranberries - Iron Man (Black Sabbath)
Kill them. Kill the Norwegians. Who the hell thought this song would be good, when sung by a breathy female and moving to a slow reggae beat???

Anythine on "The Commitments" soundtrack!

Mannish Boy - Muddy Waters cover of his own tune made popular by another. Does that count?

Use to do a musical form to G&R's Sympathy. Liked it better too.

Just a few for the moment....

Covers:

Cake-I will Survive
Orgy-Blue Monday
Lauren Hill-Turn your lights down low (Bob Marley)

Hi! You been okay? Haven't seen you for a couple days. :)

Oh and Marxist..I completely agree about Luther. The man can turn the worst pap pop into something amazing.

Dynamite Hack's version of "Boyz in tha Hood". The video's the best.

Can't think of any off hand. I just really just wanted to say, "Hi Modest Mouse."

Metallica - "Turn the Page" (Bob Seager)

I actually prefer it to the original...

Most hated cover:
Britney Spears - "I Love Rock 'n Roll" (Joan Jett and the Blackhearts)

Normally I'm completely against any violence towards women, but that blonde bubble headed silicon bitch deserves to be shot for her sacrilige.

Social Distortion- Ring of Fire

Smashmouth- I'm a Believer

Save Ferris- Come on Eileen

Dead Kennedys- Viva Las Vegas (Elvis)
Did Elvis sing about running out of spped?

Weezer- Mrs. Robinson (Simon and the Funky-man)
Yes, the 'Robinson' has plagued me through my life, but dammit, it's Weezer!

Wesley Willis - Girls on Film (Duran Duran)
DD as sung by a schizophrenic? Sign me up!

Against All Authority - Ska Sucks (Propaghandi)
Or did Prop do it first? Either was a semi-ska version :)

Extremely Rare... Bad Religion - We're a happy family (Ramones)
Hard to find, but just good

Harry Slash and the Slashtones- Walk (Pantera)
AKA the RVD house show theme. Greatness.

Motorhead- Enter Sandman (Metallica)
It's Motorhead. It's Metallica. It's Motortallica

Save Ferris- Come on Eileen

Strangers with Candy - Take on me

New Found Glory - That Thing You Do & Glory of Love

Limp Bizkit - Faith, actually the only song I like by them

Lemonheads - Mrs Robinson

Alien Ant Farm - Smooth Criminal

Along with just about every Punk cover of a song, they always make it better.

[edited to add a song I forgot]

Mellon, you like "Faith" by Limp Bizkit? Your stock is falling......

Lick?:p

How about a samba to The Pizzicato Five's version of "Girl From Impanema?" Just don't grab my ass. Hard.

All of the covers that come to mind have already been hit upon by others here, except the great cover of Gary Numan's 'Cars' as done by Fear Factory with Gary sitting in. Of course I love the original....
How about the version of 'Slam' that Onyx teamed up with Bio-Hazard to do....? that was fucking ripping.....

If anyone picked up that DVD/Bonus CD set that tool put out about a year ago you were treated to a very pristine rendition of Zep's 'No Quarter'.
Or what about Phunk Junkeez kinda covering Kiss' 'i love it loud'?....that's a really fun song...and speaking of Kiss I always liked Dinosaur Jr's version of 'Goin Blind'....
Pantera did a fresh version of 'Planet Caravan' by Sabbath.

An oldie but a goodie is 'Higher Ground' as done by the Red Hot Chili Peppers....

oh and that version of 'Fat Albert' by Dig on that Saturday morning cartoon soundtrack comp.

I guess I had a few more rattling around in my head after all.....
:)

Not lick, like. Unless you are going to suggest licking something that is in no way, shape or form sexual. Then I might consider it.

:p

And I do know that crappy song, but as I said, it is craptacular.

:D

Marxist may have beaten me to it but.....

Faith? What the fuck are you thinking MC? You were still my girl even after you jumped ship to Marxist's pimp wagon, but you are off my Xmas list babe.

*shakes head*

how could I forget.......

'Cinnamon Girl' as revisioned by Type-O Negative....originally birthed by my hero Neil Young. One note solos rule.....

Jimmi Hendrix - All Along the Watchtower (Bob Dylan)
Miles David - Somewhere Over the Rainbow (Judy Garland(?))
Everclear - Brown Eyed Girl (Van Morrison)
Fiona Apple - Across the Universe (The Beatles)
Ella Fitzgerald- Mack the Knife (Bobby Darin)

i'm too tired to think of any more

No, I don't think I am. You think I'm great and you think I'm wonderful. Besides you're the one who has weird taste in music, not me.

Joe Cocker: "She Came in Through the Bathroom Window" and "A Little Help from my Friends" (Beatles)

Sarah McLaughlin: "Song for a Winter's Night" (Gordon Lightfoot)

Power Station: "Get It On (Bang a Gong) (can't remember the original group!)

Tom Jones: "You Can Leave Your Hat On" (Joe Cocker)

BTW: Tom Jones did an absolutely awesome version of Tracey Chapman's "Give Me One Reason to Stay Here" in concert. Hope he records it!
