Couple of Computer Questions

My 15 year old son was home alone for a few hours this morning, and when I got home today and went online, I had noticed he had cleaned out the cookies and the history. I found this to be a little odd as he has never done it before. (atleast not on my computer he hasn't). I only noticed because when I logged on to Lit, I had to retype my password. And I have it set up to use cookies so I don't have to log in each time. I went into Cookies and it's been cleaned out, and I haven't done it in a few days. Also checked Cache, it's empty also.

Now for my questions:

1. Is there anyway for me to go find out where he might have been online.

2. Is there anyway for me to see the history for other days besides today? (when I hit the history button on my browser it only shows a blank history for today (except where I have been ofcourse). I would like to see back dates.. like a week or so ago).

I'm using IE 6.0

Sounds like he wiped out the history and if that is the case then no. Sorry. I would suggest a parental guide that is out there but my guess is he might be able to get around that too.

look for windows file........windows.000 on your hard drive.....open it.........look for a history file........open it........look in browser I.E.6 file......it will have pics if he has been to a porn site.......

This file connot be erased with history .

Yes, but I don't know how. First look in the trash to see if that's empty, but if he was smart, he'd have emptied that too. There should be a way to read your hard drive and hopefully recover the missing data, as long as you don't erase it somehow, or write over it. A more knowlegable computer geek could probably do so for you, if you are willing to go to the trouble.

I'm not trying to catch or stop him. I know he looks at Porn. Who wouldn't if they had access to it. Hell I was stealing porn magazines at his age from my father.

I was just curious to the sites he visited :D

Koala,

I found the "Windows" file..

but can't find anything "windows.000"

The only history file I find on my computer is just todays history.. of mine. Not his.

Like mother, like child.

You'll probably need the services of a specialist; someone that can pick apart the memory of your computer byte by byte and recover the history. The cops and the F. B. I. supposedly have the skill.

I'm not sure how it works nowadays, but in the age before Windows when a file was deleted, only the first character would get overwritten.

Did he also purge the Temporary Internet files?

If he didn't, you should be able to search the temporary internet files for *.htm to see what site(s) he visited.

Would a system restore be able to recover those files?

Probably not. If a mirror program is backing thing sup often enough to catch this, it's probably not going to be useful -- it will back up the bad files before you notice the problem.

Make sure you really want to know where he has been. He is 15. What did you do when you were 15. Keep in mind that what you see may only be fantasy and made up. Remember those notes you wrote to your friends when you were 15. It is probably best if you really on the parenting that you did when he was small. Also, if you confront him, he looks like he is smart enuf to know where you have been and will be sure to mention it. It might be best to just ignore it unless you have reasone to believe he might be in danger. But if he is a normal masturbating 15 year old I would not worry about. He is filled with anxiety anyway that you might find out, that is why he deleted it.

Hate to remind you that he is probably normal but 15 is what 15 is.

By the way I hate 15 year old children. It is the worst possible age.

I do not know how old Lucifer was when he was thrown out of heaven but my guess would be 15.

WH is right on with this one since most people miss these temp files that is the first place I go to see where people have been. That and cookies as most people don't know about those either. Probably too late though - sorry, I've been offline since last Sunday when I exceeded my hourly limit. So I went out and bought a 2-way satellite system - now I can cruise to my heart's content (and it is much faster too).

I asked Ben last night why he had cleaned out the history and the cookies and such.

He showed me what he had printed out (Mariners schedule) and he said he clicked on my favorites folder to go check out saved websites I have.

I have two kinds of websites saved.. Porn sites (mainly erotic artsy stuff.. nothing hard core is saved) and car sites. He said he checked out some of the erotic arts stuff.. and was afraid I'd be angry, so he cleaned cookies.. history and temp files. I don't blame him.. I would have done the same thing.

I explained to him that he was welcome to look at my saved files but he wasn't to (1) tell his father or (2) go to any "hard core" porn sites. He laughed and went to play X-box.

:D

If you're REALLY interested, there are some illegal programs out there that will recover stuff like that. Look around some warez sites. (It's a variation of the "Go-back" type programs) Also, you could install a keylogger if you're really interested to see where he goes next time.

those programs aren't illegal..are they? And why did you find it necessary to post as Unregistered?
