Country music legend Merle Haggard dies at 79

Not a huge fan of country music but it has it's moments. He was an icon.

I wasn't a big fan of the Hag, but I really liked Pancho & Lefty....especially when Merle rumbles in the final verse "he only did what he had to do......and now, he's growing old". Perfect.

"If We Make It Through December" ought to be the theme song of the Dead Pool.

Merle was old and not well, but this is still depressing, in no small part because contemporary country music is utter shit. He was in our general area last summer; I should have made it a point to go see him.

They were riding on the tour bus and two band members were talking. Merle heard one say, "if we make it through December we'll be fine"
5 min later it was a song.
Merle never should've gone to Willie's in Hawaii to make Django and Jimmie last year.
Ya gotta be in shape to hang with Willie.
I missed the deadline for the dead pool cuz I was devoted to my 30 drunken days of December, but I had a list. Merle and Kristofferson are on it, but not Willie.
Fekker's too tough.

I saw him once close to 20 years ago. He was drunk as skunk. The concert wasn't great, but it was great to be able to see him. The world lost an amazing songwriter today.

And always remember, he was high as a kite when he wrote Okie From Muskogee.

Had a friend that saw George Jones about 20 years ago in the same condition. He actually said the same thing, "concert wasn't great, but it was great to see him finally".

When he was first starting out, things were going bad.
Someone told him to go see a certain woman.
He went to her house. There was a piano and sheet music all over the floor.
He thought she was nuts and almost walked out.
Then she played him a song.
The Fugitive
The big hit that made him.
The lady was Lynn Anderson's mother.
Lynn is a country legend who just died recently.

I can't understand why they kept showing his hands but not his face on TV

I wish I could have seen The Possum before he passed. He didn't make it out to the west coast very often, however.

I can say without reservation, that sucks.
Today was also his birthday.

I saw Chuck Berry when he was about 80. Pretty good show.

I remember at the end of the night he said "yeah, yeah, I'll play Johnny B. Goode for y'all....y'all would lynch me if I didn't!" (He wasn't smiling).

I've been listening to Willie's Roadhouse on sat radio all day.
They're only playing Hag songs all day and taking calls.
Willie just called in. He doesn't sound bad for a guy that looks 137.

I saw George at a music festival in the 80's but I was too wasted to remember it.
I spent last New Year's eve in George's bar in Nashville.
I was wasted, but I remember it.
He wrote in his auto-bio that because of cocaine, he would sometimes quack like a duck and couldn't control it.
He actually did some concerts where he quacked through every song. Never sang a word.
That'd be interesting.

Wow, that's some seriously good coke.
