Yep...Brightdawn is moving....

So much to do...so little time....

September 29 is the big day. And wow was this a fast decision. I was offered a job on Sunday, and gave my notice at my current job today.

What to do first...what to put off till later...

If anyone has any suggestions....HELP!

Things I've done wrong...

"Oh I have enough boxes."

"That won't break if I put it there, will it?"

"I'll just go ahead and pack most of my clothes."

"I don't need bubble wrap."

"This box isn't THAT heavy..."

"I'll pack the kitchen, I don't really need to cook." (...a week before moving)

Thanks purrbaby...

I'll try to avoid all those....makes list...

1.get lots of boxes...
2.buy bubble wrap by the roll...
3.leave out something to cook with....
4....

Wow....

I just finished a major move just over 6 weeks ago...

1. Smaller boxes are better than big ones.

2. Label everything with detail and you may wish to include an inventory list in each box.

3. Butcher paper is cleaner than news paper and that is what our moving company used when helping with the last few boxes we needed assistance with... Electronics, lamps, etc...

4. Plan a moving party and invite your friends, (R.S.V.P. so you know how much food is required) unless you are hiring a mover...

5. Never assume that friends won't help you pack... Especially the kitchen where you will need to work from a step stool or ladder.

6. Choose what you are gonna move carefully as we all seem to accumulate more stuff than we actually need... (If you are using a mover and this is a long move you will pay by the pound)

*Sounds like a load of extra work but opening every box seeking an escential item once you have moved takes much longer.

If you already have a new address you can use the internet to turn on many of your utilities.

I wish you luck and the better organized you are the easier the move.

Wow...thanks hun *hugs*....great advice

Knew some of it, like the smaller boxes and the butcher paper...but I never thought to ask friends over for a packing party...sounds like fun.

Think hard before you pack stuff that is dated or old. Sometimes it is better to donate them near your current house instead of tossing them at the new (and wondering why you moved it).

Keep moving receipts including purchases of bubble wrap, duct tape, boxes, gas and food because you can deduct them from your taxes next year.

Don't let your important papers out of your possession!

Plants can be excellent thank you gifts for neighbors-they don't tend to travel really well.

Good luck!!!

One trick that worked for me.....label the boxes as to which room they go in 'lounge' 'diner' 'bedroom'....that way you know where they go straight away.

Also....keep the kettle, cups, tea bags, coffeee, milk etc to hand...pack in one box and DONT let out of your sight!!!!

Good luck!

Loved this! There's nothing worse than getting to your new place fairly late in the day and not being able to locate your coffee the next morning!

Also a good idea to donate or throw away stuff, as INeed said. If you haven't worn something in a couple of years because you're waiting til you can get back into it (something I tend to do), just go ahead and donate it. When you get that size again, reward yourself with new clothes.

Use washcloths and towels as part of your packing material, especially for your fragile dishes. We've had people send us gifts like that before.

When I pack I always go through each room I'm packing and reorganise Everything. I toss what I don't want and put kids toys etc all back into appropriate places. I also clean off anything that's dusty or needs washing. (I kind of Spring Clean in a big way as I'm packing) It takes me Forever to pack but it makes the unpacking Much easier when all you have to do is open a box and then put everything where it goes in the new house and not have to worry about if it's clean or if it's something you really want to keep, or if it's only "part" of a toy or whatever.

Also, I agree. Label, label, label. It's so much easier when you want to find something quickly. Plus if every box is labled with what room it's from then you can plunk the boxes down in the Right room as they're brought in, instead of having a big pile in one room and not knowing what's in them.

What do you mean 'the next morning' ??? I needed several that night!!!

It did save my life though....

So far, everyone had offered a ton of good advice.

My only suggestions to add would be:
1.) Take care of the guys moving you. It is kinda like greasing the wheels. I know my parents always bought pizza the morning of all our moves years ago.

2.) Be sure all essentials are packed in your car versus accidently in a box somewhere. This includes medications, important papers, and the keys to your new place.

3.) Try to relax as much as possible. It is easier to remember everything if you are at a relaxed state of mind instead of stressing and leaving stuff behind.

and most importantly, make sure your intimates are hidden well unless the movers are cute, then use your best judgement. ;)

Thanks everyone....

Ineed...I never thought about the tax refund...will have to look into it top see if it's the same for up here in Canada

Emes...good idea to keep the basics all together like that...will need it as soon as we get there

Celtic.. I love the using towels and such as wrapping..that will help a lot

Free...I have a lot of stuff to dust off....and your right...doing it now will save a lot of time and energy later

Azul...I will definitly think of the movers....they are my family after all...and I will try to relax...as much as I can

So thanks eveyone...all great ideas and I will use them

25 more days....and hardly a box packed

I really don't like this packing stuff...wish I could get someone to do it all for me...but thats not in the cards. *sigh*

Dont forget too to keep your cockscrew handy for that bottle of wine once the day is over.....and also get take away numbers of the local fast food places near your new house....THEY are a godsend til you get sorted!

Its so hard packing up your home....what about having a 'packing party'? I love that idea!!!

Ohhhhhhhh!!!

What about a Litogether Packing Party for Bright! Sounds like fun!!

Sounds like a great idea Emes....the wine that is....

I'm moving to a pretty small town, only 2 fast food places there...and ones a Subway.

But I am planning to have a cold case of ale ready and a family member is helping out and making supper for us when we get there.
