Ok, here is my challenge. Pretend you have just been given $100,000.00 to spend on pretty much whatever you like. Just a couple of limitations:

1. No paying off existing bills.

2. No buying a house, super car, yaht, etc., that would allow you to spend all the money at one time. You must live within your current means.

We were discussing the Powerball at work today and how overwhelming it would be to wake up and be instant millionaires. A friend offered up this challenge to me and I have come no where close, but here are a few of the things I would buy:

$7,999.99 Canon 1Ds MkII
$1,999.95 Canon 70-200mm f2.8 L IS USM
$4,879.00 Canon 300mm f2.8 L IS USM
$1,349.99 Canon 24-70mm f2.8 L USM
$1,499.99 Canon 16-35mm f2.8 L USM
$274.00 Apple 30GB iPod
$4,771.61 Sony VAIO 2.26Ghz Laptop
$25,970.00 2007 Dodge Nitro R/T

$48,744.53 Subtotal

$51,255.47 Remaining

Maybe its just me, but I got really tired of trying to come up with things to buy. If I ever won the lottery I believe I'd take the $100,000.00 for spending on whatever I wanted and I would want to secure an annual income of $100,000.00 for myself. After that I don't think I would be very interested in the rest of the money. I guess you can't miss what you've never had. See how you can do!

OK, so the idea is that (more or less) the money must be spent frivolously, not practically?

no problem: new computers, new wardrobe and a whole lot more eating out. :>

I would have no problem at all spending it. Of course I WOULD buy a house and design it exactly the way I wanted it, but since that is out of the question, for some reason (why?) I still would have no problem whatsoever spending every last dime/penny/cent of whatever money would come my way.... believe me :D

1. Pay for my daughter's first 2 years at Columbia
2. treat myself to a bagel w/ a schmear

SHOES!!

I would buy shoes and clothes and a real vacation (the majority of the moolah) and prepay on my master's (another big chunk).

Man, this was too easy.

$100,000.00 is such a small amount of money these days, (not that I would turn it down for that reason), I have 5 kids 3 of which have already started looking towards college, one in 2 years, one in 4 years one in 5 years, if I wanted to give them a chance to not have to work full time and go to college, it would break down to around 40 G's to the eldest, 27 G's to the second, 20 G's to the 3rd, and 6 1/2 G's each to the twins.

If I did a little sensible investing I would have given them effectively the same amount at the age of 18, but the twins would have had the power of their cut dramatically by inflation.

But even with all that, they would still have to work to find money for a college education. I also would most likely take care of the kid’s education funds this way before I would spend a penny on other frivolous things.

I'd charter a plane, cruise the globe to pick up all my favorite Lit friends & their families, and I'd rent out this place for a week of good times together.

Well, $100k probably wouldn't be enough, but let's pretend it would.

Yay! Pick me, pick me, pick me! :D :p

I'd have to get new golf equipment, and update my hockey bag. Probably around 13g right there.

I can remodel my house right? Quilted Maple cabinets and built-ins throughout, with Curly Cherry millwork inside and Teak outside, all custom. So basically, I'd buy a bunch of lumber from my work, and make the stuff myself to save on labor costs, otherwise I wouldn't be able to get my grown-up (ha ha) toys.

actually - it would be no problem for me.... yes - I can be a boring person at times..... ;)
I think I would partially prepay my kids college - an option in my state
With what was left.... I think I would vacation until it all ran out.... Maybe in the Keys (after the storms) or maybe the Bahamas.

That would not take long at all to spend $100,000. Not at all.

I'd put a big downpayment on 3 or 4 different rental houses and then use the revenue from those to pay for my kids education, a vacation, whatever :)

$100K doesn't even come CLOSE to being able to pay off all my bills.....  That is, unless you don't include my mortgage......

Nope, I couldn't possibly spend that much money if I wasn't allowed to spend it on practical stuff like a house and setting up an annual income for the rest of my life. I considered buying or starting a business, but I really don't want the responsibility. All I want to do is live comfortably in a big city where I can visit museums and see plays when I'm not at home writing or playing with the children I want to have. And yet, it somehow seems like the more modest ambitions are often the most impossible to accomplish.

And just where are we (presumptuous, yeah that's me) going scaly? It looks fabulous.

$100,000? Slightly frivolously? hmmm $25K to each of my sons (nothing says they can't pay down their mortgage/put a deposit on their house :) ) and $50K on vacations. I've still got a long list of places I'd like to see and I'd much rather have the experiences/memories than more material things...though I might pick up some lingerie and shoes on my travels. :D

I know I would probably use it to help some of the people I love. I wish I could say I'd blow it all on luxuries, I doubt that I really would.

It'd be nice to remodel my kitchen though.

Pretty boring, huh?

I bet I could spend all that money buying things online in less than 48 hours.....easily.

Fancy make-over from top stylist guru type - including clothes, hair and make-up for me and Wife [and any friends or family who wanted it too].

Private jet and pilot to cater to my whims. I could actually see my family more than once every two years!

Entertainment outings like gigs and theatre.

So many DVDs, CDs and books need to live with me.

I've probably overspent. :(
