Could someone remind me why I submit my work?

I'm having a bad ratings day. I have recently put up entirely too many new things at the same time. Which means, of course, that there are more stories and poems for people to rip apart.
So could someone please remind me why I do this? I'm about to hide under the covers and cry.
Oh! And could someone please tell me why practically every one of my poems gets a 2 for its very first vote (with no pc)?
Or you could just feel sorry for me. Or maybe just give me a kick in the ass? Whatever suits your fancy.

there's no crying in Literotica...... , there, now buck up and quit yer whining before I poke you....hard....with a sharp stick.

Poetry is tough babe, the critics are too demanding (imo) did you write them for you? then don't worry about it. :rose:

Abs is right (did i really just type that? ;) )

ratings schmatings say I,as long as you're happy with your work thats the main thing and you've got to remember you can't please everyone all the time :)

Could you tell me why as soon as one of mine is approved I get an almost instant e mail with scathing comments about my personal life.. which bears no resembelance to my stories? and I assume that very same person gives me a 1 bomb. Since my ratings always start with a 1.

I think that sucker is looking for me to dump on me!!!

oh yeah!

Ratings get to us all at times love, but honestly they're just numbers. look to the feedback of folks you trust for a real idea of how well you're doing :)

You submit because you love your master.

oops...um..

I mean; you submit, because of the thrill to see your work in LIGHTS!! illuminated by Cathode Ray Tubes!!! (or maybe LCD?) seen by thousands (potentially). To SHARE your expression...with the HOPE that someone will SEE you ..really see you..a bit of you..and make a connection...and maybe love you for it.

it is putting your heart on your sleeve.

Yep that's it exactly. How wonderfully said.

Thanks to the rest of you for the sympathy and the poke with the stick! You're right that I shouldn't pay attention to the numbers.
Thanks for the reminder.

You submit because you know that there are sane people who appreciate your work and, even though there is some sad sad soul out there who has nothing better to do than denigrate, there are hundreds who think that you are the dogs bollocks and read you avidly.

Although I think Rhino's answer should get an honourable second place :D.

The Earl

Of course, I don't need to improve. I'm infallible.

The Eral

You submit because you think you're good.

Sincerely,
ElSol

I don't know about that. I think I'm decent. By the way, Elsol- I've been meaning to tell you this. I took your thoughts on the pov thing seriously, and both of my new stories are in third person. So, thanks for sending me in a new direction. :)

I haven't read the rest of the responses to this yet, but if you're just writing for the votes and feedback, instead of just writing for yourself, then you're going to cause yourself a lot of extra stress.

Write what you're happy with and move on. Turn off the votes and commentary options if you're that bothered by it.

what she said!!!!!... it's about you having fun writing... the scores and comments are the icing on the cake... and well.. sometimes... the baker seems to get the icing confused with the can of manure for the garden!!!!

Hey, I've only posted one poem, and I got a 2 without any views ! How crazy is that !

Why did you post, same as everyone else in this place. Saves paper, gives the kids a laugh, reduces stress, a cry for help, or just a little'ol bit of S&M. :nana:
If you like it, that's the best thing - every other vote, mark, comment - that's just icing.

see above.. sometimes the cook gets the can of manure confused with the icing... but what the hey!!!

As far as poetry goes, th critics there are usually pretty harsh, but fair. They expect you wish to imrpove upon your craft and that false high votes only hurt your ability to grow by making you think nothing is wrong.

The start out two sounds like a troll who has realized ones get swept. I'm sorry you picked up one of the less stupid kinds, but in the end, it's only his/her malice you see, not a subjective measure of your work.

I had my own personal troll for a long while. Evey story started with a one and semi-lintelligent attempt to tell me how to write to his standards. It became rather funny before long, watching my works succeed despite his malice and he eventually got tired and found someone easier to get a rise out of I suppose. Of coures, I pay no attention to my scores, so trolling me is akin to poking an armadillo with a stick. He just don't take any notice and it gets boring after a while.

Thanks all for the reality check! I do write for myself, and the ratings are just the icing.
Now that I have all that in perspective again, I'm doing much better. :)
