Lol it seems really daunting to see that now and realize how "little" we learn over 100 years later when compared to them. However, I think if we had all been exposed to that kind of learning process, we'd have done fine -- unless, of course, we were just poor students.

fair enough, but some of this was almost "cultural knowledge." take those 1895 kids, and drop a current 8th grade final on them. hell, i'm and '88 kid and i don't know how i'd do. the single greatest thing the exam reveals? there was a far greater respect for the basics and i wish we'd get back to that.
