I'll start by saying I am aware this is not the right place to be posting this but I am having a heck of a time with a costume idea. Obviously it needs to be BBW friendly ( and I'm not talking size 18/20) ;) it needs to be something I can actually function in at work all day, it needs to be lightweight as the building is about 90 degrees and I suffocate on a daily basis as it is.. and lastly it needs to be elderly friendly.. no sexy school girls, french maids, nurses etc... I was hoping for something that is clearly something if that makes sense.. not just a robe or dress that could double as a million things.. .. something more their era or they could relate to would be great... Luceille Ball, a flapper, etc.. I'll admit I was trying to get out of it easy and just buy something online but am not fnding anything big enough that meets my list of needs..

How about a gypsy ...all you need is a flouncy skirt and pretty blouse. You can tie a scarf around your head so that it ties on the side and wear lots of beads and bangly bracelets.

If you're into a bit of cross-gender costuming, how about a "bus-drivers uniform" with a Ralph Kramden name-tag -- or some othe recogniseable Jacky Gleason impersonation?

PS: If you're not into cross-gender costuming -- and can sing -- you might want to do some research on Kate Smith to pin down her characteristic costuming and learn the words to "No Business Like Show Business" and "God Bless America." (and any other song associated with Kate Smith.)

You probably have a "Kate Smith costume" in your closet, but that kind of costume is more about the impersonation than the wardrobe.

I don't see why How To isn't the right place for this thread. We give ideas and share info all the time. :)

My friend just had the same problem trying to find a real plus size costume for a party. I looked online for her, and you're absolutely right, most sites' ideas of plus size are in the 12-20 range.

What she's ended up doing is using her own clothes and accessorizing. With a traditional black robe someone sent her from the Middle East over a black skirt, a wig, jewelry and makeup, she's going to the party as Medusa.

Have you been through the women's section of your local thrift and consignment shops to see if there's anything suitable for your ideas, or you can create something off of the ideas you found online? Some that might come together rather easily:
- Medieval or Renaissance (there should be resources for finding this stuff locally, due to the SCA and other re-enactment/period groups)
- Mother of the Bride of Frankenstein
- Red Riding Hood (especially easy if you or a friend can sew the cape)
- Mother Goose
- Mardi Gras
- Cowgirl
- Cupid(ess)
- Something Mythological or Greek

First of all, wouldn't it be nice if there was an area here at lit for BBW and FA folks, where we could discuss issues and interests?

I don't know the right place to ask the powers that be for this.

Check out http://www.dimensionsmagazine.com/forums/showthread.php?t=13381 for some fantastic ideas.

There are quite a few BBW-related threads about. If none of them work for you, I'd suggest starting your own in the Playground. :)

I'm going to guess the powers that be are unlikely to create separate forums for different groups beyond those having to do with the main categories of writing, sexuality (GLBT, BDSM, etc.) and language. If, for instance, People of Size got a forum, it'd appear unfair to not give one to Average, Atheletic, Slim People, different races, Smokers, NonSmokers, Vegetarians, etc. ad nauseum. Because Lit is based on free speech, separate forums would also become prime targets for trolls, unfortunately. :(

The mingling among people of different shapes, ethnicities, styles, interests, etc., is one of the best things about this community, IMO. It tends to attract folks who are open-minded and very supportive of others.

Lots of face paint and a trip to the local discount/used clothing store, and presto a clown is born.

Big black dress and a big black hat, theres nothing wrong with witchs, bonus if you can find a big ugly fake nose.

Not very creative but hey its a tought.
