I am curious about the copyright statement at the bottom of the page. Does this mean that you, Laurel and Manu, own everything that is typed here?

Are we breaking copyright law when we cut-n-paste to quote someone on here?

Hhhhmmmmm...... The blond head is having painful streaks going through the grey tissue at thoughts of trying to sort this out....

Yeah, what sexy-girl said.

That refers to the BB software.

It I create a thread do I own the copyright to it or only what I post?

Or is this considered a public forum so no one owns anything?

This is a conversation though, isn't it?
That's like saying if I started talking to someone and a third party heard me and stuck it in his book I could sue him for copyright infringement.

Besides, since I'm using your board and we have no agreement that states otherwise than I believe that whatever is posted here is your property.. isn't it?
On a side note, I remember when I was going to start a geosities personal website, then I read the fine print. If you agree to use their webspace everything you put on it, stories or pictures you created, becomes theirs.

on a side note of copyright ... if you mention the word sciencetology in an article they own the whole article

lisa thinks this is crap so if im wrong sorry but i read it somewhere hehe

Maybe in Britian but not in the US, I know that sexy-girl.

ok ok thats 2 vs 1 then im wrong :)

i know theres some VERY strange laws about the church of sciencetology though

Where is a lawyer whe you want one?

I understand that the stories remain the property of the authors, but I think that bb posts are a different animal, being more like corespondence, which belongs to the reciepient, not the sender.

I do know that stories that were based on posts to the SRP board have been collected and form part of Closet Desire II, but I never thought about the copyrite issue that may arise from it.

Where are all those students of the law?

I can help...

...with the Closet Desire II bit.

Contributors gave their permission for one time use of their edited stories and received modest compensation in return. The anthology as a whole is copyrighted in and of itself, but the writers retain all rights to their stories. There was a considerable amount of participation between all parties in getting it together. (Hint...the stories weren't just "lifted" without the author's written permission).

It might interest some to know that many erotica anthologies publish only previously published stories (don't know why) so those who have been published in CD or Literotica.com's book can submit them to other publishers provided they still hold rights to the stories.

We have lawyers at our publishers who deal with things, but I find this rule of thumb handy. A story is a work of art no different from a painting. Although it is easily copied I consider it stealing to take and use something that was created by someone else. If you always start with the premise that a story "belongs" to the author (as it automatically does) then you won't go wrong.

We have agreements to produce fine art prints for the artist who illustrates our books. For each print we make he gets the majority of the proceeds and we get a percentage. Because we handle the transaction AND produce the prints we could easily cheat him, but we don't. It's based on trust and honesty.

I find that honest men and women seldom have a need for lawyers to defend themselves. I find that it helps keep my life simple--and profitable.

CD I never ment to imply that you had done anything dishonest or unethical, or even dishonerable. Just that there were questions involved in publishing stories that had thier genusis on a bb that I had never considered. I was more 'thinking out loud' then anything.

I am thrilled that some of my friends from the "Society of the Dare" were able to get thier work published, and that another friend from the society made it possable is like icecream on the pie. I knew that we doing good work there, but your anthology is proof. Good luck with sales.

Hee hee...

...never took it that way...honest! Gee...you should know me better than that!

There's a lot of writers and artists who get ripped off--sometimes without knowing--a lot of times with their full cooperation. It pisses me off because it often makes people skeptical of my intentions.

The bit about stories on a bb is why I think my rule of thumb is handy. If somebody else wrote it then it belongs to them--even if it's on a public forum like Lit. Most people would walk down the street and see a wallet and know that it belongs to somebody yet those same people might take somebody's artistic work and use it without a concern in the world.

I figure that if it's something I want to use then it has some value to it. I might not be able to afford it in which case I say thanks but no thanks.

Even though most of use anonymous IDs on here, we aren't really anonymous. It's easy enough to say "hey, I like that story--would you consider...?"

I think manners make us all a bit more civilised.
