Widespread opposition against “Cop City” police training center at Atlanta city council meeting
‘To the chagrin of government authorities in the state of Georgia, a groundswell of opposition was revealed again to their relentless attempts to impose by force the building of “Cop City,” a military-style police training center costing $90 million approved by the Democratic Party-controlled city council in 2021.’
Among prospective funding sources is the Atlanta Police Foundation.
‘The APF, whose governing board and trustees are full of corporate executives, is collecting funds from sponsors such as Coca Cola, Norfolk Southern, Home Depot, Delta Airlines and UPS, all of which directly benefit from this “law and order” campaign.’
This represents substantial corporate interest this military style police training facility. Cop City may not be good for striking airline or soft drink workers.
The ongoing militarization of police agencies is necessary because of 1] the inability of the ruling class to offer even one solution to any of multiple crises, 2] growing anger at police terrorism which claims a thousand lives annually, 3] the ongoing drive to World War III, and 4], the regime’s inability to enforce such policies except by adopting authoritarian forms of rule.
Trotsky taught that the institutions of the Capitalist state are never neutral. The armies of police, with the court and penal systems exist to enforce ruling class diktats. Normally, that intent can be hidden behind parliaments and congresses, the press and other such institutions.
But in times of crisis, he explained, state institutions are incapable of masking the reality of class rule. It becomes necessary to reveal the might of the state to rule through the threat and use of force.
At that moment, Trotsky concluded, fascism has arrived.
