Seventeen magazine (that bastion of liberalism and elitist hegemony--the most over used word of the past 25 years, even ahead of paradigm) ranked colleges by how COOL they were. The top three are:
  1. Rice University -- Houston, TX
  2. Yale University -- somewhere up North
  3. University of Texas at Austin

I heard this on the local public radio station today, KUHF, but can't seem to find a reference online (http://www.seventeen.com/ is an excellent example of why publishing types shouldn't be allowed anywhere near web pages).

WOOHOOOO! We're #3!!!

*runs around like an idiot making longhorn signs with my fingers while singing "The Eyes of Texas"*

Jeez, and they call us COOL?

I think that "synergy" is poised to outrank "hegemony" in the next 25, Binks.

The paradigm of our hegemony produces its own synergy.

I wonder if it was FUCK radio that pushed Rice over the top? .....Oh, but they don't have that anymore, do they?

They do have a beautiful campus, groovy people and several excellent lecture series. Good for them!

Sadly (or happily if your heart is weak), FUCK is no longer the tag line for KTRU, 91.7, here in Houston. It is, however, still often rated as the best independent college station in the country among broadcast professionals. The lack of programming managers helps a lot, along with a hands-off tradition by the administration (broken, only as far as I know, by shutting down the station for overdubbing Rice sporting events with utterly unrelated music; typical KTRU sonic action).

Where else do you get to hear local sonic experiments, Bela Bartok and Hindu pop in the same hour?

http://www.ktru.org/

It is a long tradition, btw, to rearrange the letters from the bumper sticker (or several copies of it) to spell enlightening or sometimes just frightening messages.

those damn Longhorns cant win anything when it matters. But then again Mack Brown is the *coolest* coach when the game means nothing at all :D

Sincerely,
The Real UT to your east (hell ya'll aint even got the right color orange)

its a perfect fit for the current qb, he has burnt Texas more than once!

ok, before I get the crap kicked outta me for doggin the 'horns and hijacking a thread, I will back out the door...........

Cool? Texas? I'm having trouble thinking of that miserably hot and desolate place as being cool. Probably because I'm enjoying the delightful sunshine and breezy sixty-one degree temps up north at the moment.

Besides which -- Texas is full of Texans. Cool? Surely this is a joke thread... :p

I think a few folks need to be run off a mountain while the culprit is looking the other way. I'm sure the citizens of Texas won't mind :D

And you agree?
I went to Rice, so my opinion is rather biased. UT is pretty ok, espcially the music scene in Austin and the strip. I have nothing to say about Yale.

I get UT. If for nothing else but SXSW. I suppose Yale I understand(If you worship at the holy altar of materialism Rich Kid U. would be pretty "cool") but could someone explain Rice? What is it about that University that seperates it from, say, The University of Hawaii?

Or is it one of those Magazine things where they publish a different issue for each city?

The moron in the White House went to Yale, I think.

Jodie Foster went there too.

I wish Jodie were president. She would make a good one, I think.

When will Texans realise that hubris is not attractive? I love texas for many reasons but cannot bring myself to capitalize the T because of an event in Dallas (a form of hell) many years ago.

Texas can fuck itself. And it does. I have been there.

Oh Riff,

you're just upset because you've got family in Dallas and the drive there is so boring from where you are. I can't think of anything nice to say about where you live except I once won a whole lot of money in a casino there. Sorry.

Not only are there Texans in Texas, but a lot of others that transplanted, so no this isn't a a joke thread!:)

We're cool, not temperature wise mind you, but cool people.

Kinda hard to have desolation in a state with 21 million people. You're just jealous cuz sooooo many of those 21 million are bee-oo-ti-ful women! :D
