Scion TC - reasonably priced and reliable... made by toyota
they look cool too

anything as long as it isn't Japanese.

Landrover.

selena: roughly how much should the car cost? what else should we know about the character? obviously, if you're picturing a total gearhead w/ a classic restored '67 mustang, suggesting something like a miata ragtop just isn't gonna do it.

Trans Am, Firebird, or Camaro (in that order)

Ah now you're talking my language... actually, I had it as a Firebird... but now it seems a little... outdated? <shrug>

There's a character that already drives a Mustang... can't do two of those...

so the car I'm talking about is driven by twins (bro and sis), and they're rich kids... but in a small town... so foreign doesn't feel quite right...

I think I'm gonna have to go Camaro or Trans Am... unless anyone has a better suggestion?

selena: rich kids will absolutely not be driving those cars. at least, certainly not any kids i would call rich, anyway.

pretty much you're solely in import territory here, IMHO. depending on how rich, a lexus of some sort, or maybe a BMW z series would work. richer? audi tt. i know, you said small town, but there might be a neighboring big town where they have a dealership.

I drive a Trans Am, and my almost-17-year-old son hasn't tired of trying to wheedle me out of it yet. :D I've told him it won't ever be his, but he's still trying.

What time period is the story set in?

What kind of small town? i.e. bedroom community or farm town; located in the mountains or on the great plains?

I grew up in a small town that was equal parts railroad-town, Farm-town and Lumbermill-town. a mustang would be a "cool car" there today, but the "most cool" vehicle there is still a four-wheel drive pick-up -- even though it's almost totally converted to a "bedroom community" since I left.

In small towns, a car that will go fast and look pretty only on a paved road isn't much use for getting to the local make-out spots. Something like a Ford Expedition or Cadilac Escalade that combines the ability to get up the dirt road to Make-out Point and has seats that fold down to make space for some horizontal dance practice is far more "cool" to small-town kids than a sporty two-seater that can't handle rough roads.

Good point Harold... a truck isn't a bad idea... Ford F-150 maybe...

it's a rural northern Michigan town... dirt roads... this makes more sense :)

Dodge Ram or Dodge Durango is cooler.

(As much as I like Chevy trucks, Dodge is the current leader in "cool" 4x4's)

Jeep has no leg room or room for other activities..... :D

Range Rover... the older ones were roomy but the new ones are downsized from what i hear.....

I've used my old 93' dodge ramcharger in several stories... lots of room for fun and games.....

Good ideas...how inspired. You might also include Subaru Outbacks and Subaru Foresters. Also, there are many expensive quad-wheel drive cars that could be possibilities.

Northern Michigan is a particular culture. It is wild, rustic and woodsy, even for the rich folk. and recreation almost always revolves around the great outdoors (which they have an abundance of up there).

Having spent my fair share of time there during family vacations and summer and winter hockey camps and tournaments, I know that young guys like their 4x4's, dirt bikes, 3- and 4-wheelers, snowmobiles, Boston Whalers, Bass Boats, canoes, kayaks, rafts and tubes (I'm certain I'm skipping some mode of UP transport).

And 4x4's will often have chains on the tires during winter, snow plows (which are referred to as "blades"), and winches. And there are a lot of ski racks.

They get so much snow up there that there is seldom any shoveling done. Snow often covers first floor windows, which is why many UPper houses have second floor outdoor balconies, so they can walk out of the second floor onto the snow and not ger snowed in.

Many rich folk in the UP also have small engine planes and there are a number of small and private airports.

A fair percentage of rich folk have summer homes in the UP and do not actually live there year around.

Hope this helps. <grin>

In Michigan's UP, residents often keep an old 4x4 around to use in winter because it is not uncommon to find one's self unexpectedly off-roading.

Depends on which model of those brands -- Range Rover is more a "Rich Kid" kind of toy than a Jeep. "Small-town-rich" would tend to go for a non-import with more luxury for the dollar than a more prestigious import brand-name but a lower level of luxury.

A lot depends on how money conscious the Twins and their parents are. Are they "we can afford the best in the world" types or are they "look how many options we can afford" types.

The former would buy a Land Rover with just the standard luxury package.

The latter would buy a tricked out Durango or Escalade with GPS, Satelite phone, DVD Player, 500 Watt ten speaker stereo, six-way adjustable seats, and everything else on the option list that isn't superceded by a better option.

And as Sex&Death noted, in Michigan, the the latter type would buy the best blade and winch that can be found -- maybe even a Snow Blower in place of a simple "blade."
