I am a newbie to this site. When I started out, I didn't care about contests, just about writing stories that came into my head. Then I got involved with the Survival Contest. I found myself forcing stories and ideas on paper that were more category motivated. I found myself getting caught up in rules and regulations. When should I submit it? Was it too long, too short? Did it fit this category? Can I add to it later? I know it is good to stretch your limits and explore new worlds, but it didn't seem to be as much fun as just writing what is going on inside your head the way you want, when you want, how you want. Maybe I am going through some sort of Literotica evolution. Any thoughts.

Yes, I think the Survivor Contest is one of the worst ideas going for writer development and Web site story quality reputation. It's even spilled over into the forum in the nastiest sorts of ways.

Other than that, it's just dandy.

Some people enjoy writing under pressure and constraints. Then again some people enjoy being whipped on their bare butts with canes.

Neither one appeals to me. ;)

I also get involved in the contests, including the Survivors' Contest. Even so, I write for fun, rather than than to churn out stories. :)

For the last two years, especially last year, the Survivors' Contest did degenerate into backbiting and insults, but the primary instigator of that might have left the site. At least, he is not posting any more stories, although he may still be lurking, and I'm pretty sure he is trolling. This year, the contest seems much more sportsmanlike, but there is still almost a month to go.

To me this contest has been the best thing in the world. I am forty-four years old and have wanted to be a writer since I was in sixth grade. But there was always something more important. I am a highly competitive person and this was the stimulus I need. Since January 1st, 2009, my world has fallen apart: my beauitful 3 yo daughter developed epilepsy, my best friend lost a baby at 24 weeks due to birth defects, I miscarried, and through it all I have become an author...because this contest forced me to write...and write things I never would have (Gay Male...a 44 year old housewife...come on?) So please look for my final Survivor submission...Why YOU Absolutely Must Do Survivor 2010...if you ever want to become a 'real' author.
